Title says it all. I need a new engine for an engine that could not make it past 87,000 miles. Out of warranty time. Audi, this is embarrassing

... pistons. The second was for a timing chain defect. In all my Audi has had 6 problems and over $10,000 in repairs. They have been: excessive oil consumption (rebuild done by Audi as part of lawsuit settlement), a new turbocharger, a new AC system, new control arms, a new timing chain and tensioners, and a new high pressure fuel pump. Audi did not cover my timing chain issue because I was over 100,000 miles. I believe the timing chain issue to be relatedRead More

... has performed well but the repair costs are expensive and failures are occurring on a well kept vehicle under 100k miles. The car had oil leaking issues, which was solved and covered by Audi, a failed air condition unit at 60k miles and now at 83k miles a failed Turbo which is very expensive.Read More

The Audi A4 took off soon after its introduction due to the popular Audi 80 series sedan it replaced and the brand did improve the car extensively. Owing to its appealing design and the right traits, the sedan saw impressive selling numbers and it didn’t skimp on the reliability part. The 2011 Audi A4 has seen zero recalls to date along with facing only 39 official complaints to date. The owners of the current model complain about excessive oil consumption by the standard 2.0-liter powerplant of the sedan which plagued several models from the last year too. However, there have been no recalls addressing this issue yet. Apart from the powertrain-related problems, the 2011 Audi A4 is rock-solid in other aspects, making it a dependable daily driver. In its class, the sedan rivals the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Lexus IS 250, and the BMW 3 Series.

Audi A4 user complaints and problems

Engine problems

  • Excessive oil consumption: This has been a common issue with the Audi A4 since the last model year. In every case, the owners complain about excessive oil consumption by the engines of their vehicles. It led to the owners topping up the engine oil frequently and in some cases, sudden engine stall would occur as well.
  • Timing belt failure: catastrophic engine failure, replacement of engine Several owners of the 2012 Audi A4 reported premature failure of the timing belt of the engine. After covering a certain number of miles, the timing chains of the vehicles would degrade and fail. The failures resulted in catastrophic engine failures in several instances and the engines were either rebuilt completely or replaced. The brand did not issue any recalls yet to address this problem either.
  • Clutch failure: A couple of owners reported the sudden clutch failure issue. While driving, the clutch of the affected vehicles failed. As the owners downshifted and slowed down, the vehicles stalled suddenly as well.

Miscellaneous problems

  • Power steering failure: Some owners did face this issue after driving their vehicles for several thousand miles. While the problems occurred prematurely they did pose a serious safety risk as well. While driving, the power steerings of the affected vehicles failed and caused the steering wheels to lock up.

Electrical problems

  • Electrical fire: One case of electrical fire was reported against the 2011 Audi A4. The affected vehicle was parked outside and wasn’t driven for about 20 hours. The fire broke out on the rear side of the driver’s seat and melted the dashboard partially. The vehicle was declared a total loss and the electrical system of the vehicle was found to be the reason for the fire.

2011 Audi A4 recalls

The 2011 Audi A4 doesn’t have any recalls yet.

Should you buy a used Audi A4?

The Audi A4 has proven time and again that compact luxury sedans can be sporty too. Apart from its agile handling, the car houses a four-pot motor but is nearly as quick and fast as its peers which are powered by bigger V6 motors. On the inside too, the sedan impresses with its high-quality materials and ample storage spaces. Coming to the reliability part, the sedan can be a dependable daily driver too apart from being a comfortable mile muncher but the excessive oil consumption issue has been troubling several owners of the A4 in the last couple of years. While going for a used model of the A4, make sure to inspect the engine thoroughly along with the transmission and the power steering system.
