... hard to use and program. Reliability has been a disappointment. The entire radio and GPS system stopped working suddenly. Dealerships do not have shuttle service or offer loaners for extended repair times even when under warranty. Other brands way outperform Acura in customer care experience. Plan is to look to another brand next time.Read More

The Japanese automobile manufacturer, Acura have always been understanding the preferences and tastes of its buyers from a very long time, as a result of which they have always made its compact SUVs spacious, comfy, and reliable over the long run. The 5 seater Acura RDX  with a base price of $39,300 comes with low maintenance cost and is also popular for its high-performance quality on roads.

Eventually, the global popularity of RDX could be one of the reasons for the vehicle to hit a sales volume of 52,785 units in the respective year, followed by the Lincoln Corsair, with 26,227 units sold in the same year. Apart from the Corsair, the RDX also faces the Volvo XC60 which sells for $40,795.

The RDX’s performance and outstanding reliability seemed completely unbeatable until some of the 2020 models encountered certain issues with its faulty brakes, electrical system, and powertrain. Apart from that, according to the NHTSA website, the car’s fuel pump issue was another serious concern that lead the vehicle manufacturer to issue 1 recall along with 108 complaints raised by the Acura owners.

Electrical Problems

  • Auto speed reduction while driving

User complaint includes that the RDX SUV faces auto speed reduction while driving the vehicle in the middle of the road. Such issues usually show up when the vehicle automatically turns to limp mode and causes the engine to reduce speed, even in presence of sufficient fuel. One such malfunction may trigger when the car’s electrical sensors fail to understand the required amount of speed needed to keep the vehicle in motion, leading to speed reduction, as a result, the driver has to prefer manual acceleration and set the cruise control again to drive the car. Such concerns must be inspected and repaired.

  • Malfunctioning forward collision avoidance sensors

Malfunctionning forward collision is a common problem in most of the Acura RDX, where the sensors have been found reacting late to notify the driver about a possible forward collision, ultimately triggering a frontal crash anyhow. These issues usually show up when the faulty sensors fail to identify any object or moving entity coming close by. These issues should be taken into account by the manufacturers and ask the dealers to replace them soon.

  • Deployment of automatic brakes

Users have found auto brakes deployed while driving in the middle of the road even when the road is clear from blockage, moving vehicles, or any other object approaching from the front. Usually, such things happen when the car’s electronic braking system fails to identify the difference between a clear road, a lane, and a road with sufficient traffic and congestion. It's the faulty electronic sensors that engage the brakes rather than disengage them. These issues might compel the car’s emergency braking system to deploy the brakes even when it's not required, triggering a chance for the vehicles coming from the back to ram the car. Therefore, the dealers should be looking over the issue and fix it as soon as possible.

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Noisy service brakes

Users have found grinding noise from the braking system while engaging them. Usually, these happen when the brakes are not repaired or maintained for a long time. Such instances may happen when rust accumulates on the braking joints due to poor maintenance. Random happening of the same scenario might affect the braking pads and rotors leading to early wear and tear. Some users have claimed to find such issues even on the moderate engagement of the brakes. These issues have been noted during the cold seasons. The dealers should inspect such issues and get those replaced free of cost.

Engine stallation due to fuel pump failure

Low pressure in the fuel pump may lead to insufficient fuel supply in the car engine, eventually stopping it all of a sudden. Such instances may lead to vehicle breakdown all of a sudden.

The dealers have been notified about the issue and has been asked to replace the fuel pump assembly for free if needed. The recall for the issue was 20V314

Should You Buy a 2020 Acura RDX?

The Acura RDX SUVs are primarily known for comfort, spacious interiors, and low maintenance cost. It is one of the reasons car buyers usually take interest in Japanese vehicles. The SUV can be a difficult option for someone to say ‘no’ for those who’re particular about interior comfort. However, the powertrain issues due to the faulty electrical systems and malfunctioning service brakes had been one of the major reasons challenging the global popularity of the RDX, followed by the faulty fuel tank issue.

However, Acura did not let this issue spread far, instead issued a recall soon and instructed the dealers to perform necessary repairs to stop the fuel pump from letting insufficient oil in the engine. One such initiative makes the vehicle free from all those issues and problems that the vehicle had encountered earlier. So, if someone is willing to purchase a 2020 Acura RDX, we would suggest getting it inspected before striking the deal.
