Saturn in America
A brainchild of General Motors to combat foreign automakers, Saturn was born out of the need for innovation in 1985. It was envisioned as a brand that would operate somewhat independently with its own assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and a separate retailer network. This unique positioning allowed Saturn to adopt practices and strategies their way - a bit separate from the GM umbrella.
Saturn's Fresh Approach
Instead of just focusing on the cars, Saturn looked at the entire car-buying experience. Their revolutionary no-haggle pricing took the stress out of the negotiation process for customers. Also, by involving customers in pre-launch events and 'Homecoming' celebrations at their Spring Hill plant, Saturn nurtured a tight-knit community of brand enthusiasts.
However, as times changed, Saturn hit a few bumps in the road. GM's financial woes in the late 2000s impacted Saturn directly, and despite its unique brand appeal and dedicated customer base, it ceased production in 2009.
