Overview

The halo car of Volvo’s EV company is limited to 150 units with a price tag of more than $150,000. A coupe that can seat 2+2 members and is clearly one of the prettiest cars on the road is what can be summarized as the Polestar 2. The Polestar 1 is both expensive and exclusive. The Polestar’s hybrid drivetrain can put out a combined figure of 619 hp and this car does feel special.

Buying Advice

There is just one trim to pick from and that answers the question of which trim to buy, however since the car is limited to just 150 units then it is better to be early and get one for yourself if you have $156,000 to spare.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Being a hybrid does not have the perk of being competition-free as this car goes up against the BMW i8 and the Acura NSX. The Acura is a track focussed performance car and that puts out a serious grunt in terms of performance and tech, it is a complete hybrid that is tuned for all-out speed. The BMW is a comfortable package that does not lack performance the best way to describe it would be It is a BMW in all senses. The Polestar has its plateful with rivals like these.

Features

The 2021 Polestar 1 is a luxury premium vehicle with limited production and hence available in just a single trim level with few customization options. The main attraction of this vehicle is in its engineering. The Polestar 1 is an impressive blend of modern engineering, detail-oriented design. The Polestar 1 is priced at $156,500 and comes with Nappa leather sports seats, heated and power-adjustable seats, and all the other safety features like in a Volvo. The Polestar 1's production will be limited to just 1500 units.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The 2021 Polestar 1 returns a combined mileage of 26 MPG when running in hybrid mode and a range of 52 miles in EV mode. It also has a combined mileage of 64 MPG when both electric motors and gas engines are used. The city and highway estimates are available for the Polestar 1. The 15.9-gallon fuel tank capacity of the Polestar is average and the electric motors do give good range and efficiency.

Due to inadequate data, the comparison of the cars becomes difficult but the BMW leads the table with a combined mileage of 27mpg but the Polestar takes the lead in the electric-only mileage and the NSX comes last. The Polestar’s performance is a bit down thanks to the weight of the car and with that, the fuel efficiency of the car decreases too yielding to the above-shown results.

Interior
8.0/10

The insides of the 2021 Polestar 1 give off a great vibe which is very different from that of the German cars. There’s a very unique Volvo touch to the overall layout of the interior design. There is significant use of premium materials inside like Nappa Leather and leather-clad rims. The vehicle has a 2+2 seat configuration, with heated front seats.

The usage of carbon fiber and metal makes the inside feel rich. The front seats are generous and comfortable but the rear seat comfort is compromised. With narrow legroom and a sloping roofline digging into the headroom. The lack of space extends to the trunk area too as the Polestar 1's cargo capacity is just 4.3 cubic feet.

Cargo Space ( cu-ft)

The Polestar even though not so comfortable on the rear is the only car capable of seating 4 members. It is also not terrible with the cargo space as the BMW offers even less than the Acura however does a little better and offers 4.4cu-ft of space for cargo. The prominent interior features are:

  • Crystal gear lever knob
  • Paddle shifters
  • Carbon fiber decor inlays
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Nappa leather interior
  • Sport pedals
  • Net pocket tunnel console
  • Interior illumination

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Polestar 1’s tech and the infotainment system feel very clean and minimalistic compared to other luxury performance vehicles. The vertical infotainment screen of the Polestar 1 is tilted towards the driver for ease of use. There are only a few buttons and knobs for using the system manually.

The touchscreen's operation is fluidic and has almost zero lags and stutters, and great graphic resolution. The audio duties are taken care of by the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, with a 16-speaker setup along with a subwoofer. The Polestar 1 gets a 12.3-inch digital driver's display and a head-up display. Some of the most prominent interior and infotainment features in 2021 Polestar 1 are:-

  • Touchscreen HD infotainment system
  • Bowers & Wilkins 16-speaker audio system
  • 12.3” digital gauge cluster
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM radio
  • Polestar Connect app support
  • USB ports
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Voice recognition
  • Steering mounted audio controls

Exterior
9.9/10

The car has a styling cue of Volvo and Swedish design language with minimalistic body design. The front has a resemblance to the XC90. The use of carbon fiber makes the car lighter and sturdier.

The coupe comes with 21-inch alloy wheels that fit the elegant styling really well. LED DRLs and taillights fit in perfectly with the vehicle and help it stand out too. The Polestar 1 is an attractive, expensive package.

The Polestar 1's is the heaviest and the largest in terms of width and height out of all the vehicles in the segment. BMW also has a very striking and pleasing look while the Acura commands attention with its sporty look. All the three are good in their own defense but the BMW strikes the best balance by not being too sporty like the Acura or being too much on the side of the Polestar. Some of the exterior features are:

  • Headlight high-pressure cleaning
  • Automatically dimming exterior mirrors
  • Frameless exterior rearview mirrors
  • Dual integrated tailpipes
  • Active rear spoiler
  • 21-inch alloy wheels

Safety
9.9/10

Polestar comes under Volvo, which means its high on safety and driver support systems. Volvo has made a commitment to bring fatal accidents involving its vehicles to zero by the year 2025 and as a testament to that, lots and all the safety features come standard with the new Polestar 1. The Polestar 1 gets advanced driver assistance features like the Pilot Assist,blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist as standard. Other advanced safety features are:

  • Semi-autonomous driving
  • LED headlights
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Traffic sign recognition system
  • Blind-sport monitoring
  • Cross-Traffic Alert with auto brake
  • Pilot Assist
  • Hill Start Assist

Competition

2021 Polestar1 vs. 2021 Acura NSX

The Acura NSX is one of the few cars that can go head to head with the Polestar 1. It has been often referred to as an everyday sports car. It is priced at $154,500 and powered by a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine.

The NSX is a performance-oriented sportscar and the onboard hybrid systems have one thing to do and that is to make it go faster and faster. While on the other hand the Polestar is focused on luxury and efficiency. There is also a chance of exclusivity with the polestar considering the limited number of units to be produced.

2021 Polestar 1 vs. BMW i8

The BMW i8 has a great personality and appeal but it deceives with the speed and the smoothness of the acceleration even though it has an underpowered engine.

The words fun and comfortable sound right with this car and to make it even sweeter the i8 is very fuel-efficient even though it has a small fuel tank.Although, it does possess a huge price tag.

Final Verdict

The Polestar1 is not perfect, it does have its drawbacks and some of those are not expected from a car of that price tag, however, the car makes up for those shortcomings in every other possible aspect. The car is exclusive, powerful, efficient, comfortable, safe, and fast. It checks almost every box we would look at and that is a point we feel is great and that will make this car a good buy.
