Nissan entered the crossover market with its Murano back in 2002 but the SUV arrived on the US shores a bit later in 2009. Since then, the SUV has thrived amongst the fierce competition with its well-rounded offering and oodles of sophistication. Being a popular option in its class, the Murano has a commendable reliability department too, giving it an edge over a few of its peers. The 2014 Nissan Murano has 1 recall along with 110 complaints to date, decent enough when compared to 47,301 units rolled out for the current model year. There are complaints regarding the steering, powertrain, structure, and exterior of the 2014 Nissan Murano. While the SUV has faced complaints regarding various areas, the recall only takes care of the power steering problem while the rest of the issues are yet to be addressed by the brand. In its class, the Murano goes up against the Buick Enclave, the Hyundai Santa Fe, and the Ford Edge.
Nissan Murano user complaints and problems
Engine problems
- Engine stall: A few reports of engine stalling have been reported. The owners mention in their reports that while driving or stopping at stop lights, the engines of their 2014 Nissan Murano stalled.
- Transmission assembly failure: A single complaint mentioning this issue is there for the 2014 Murano. The owner reports that while driving, the transmission gradually stopped working and the vehicle failed to accelerate. Upon taking the vehicle to the dealership, the transmission assembly failure was detected as the reason.
- Transmission slip and loss of power: Several cases of transmission slippage and loss of power due to the transmission have been reported. In some cases, the transmissions slipped multiple times while driving and in one case, the transmission stopped working when the vehicle was being driven under extreme heat. After it cooled down, the transmission continued to work. In other cases, the transmissions stopped working briefly and intermittently resulting in loss of power.
- Transmission failure: Apart from the transmission slippage and power loss issues, several owners have faced complete transmission failures too. The failures occurred suddenly while the owners were driving their vehicles and a few complainants mentioned further that this has been a known issue with Nissan’s CVT units.
Safety problems
- Brake failure: A few owners faced complete brake failures in their 2014 Nissan Murano SUVs. The reports state that under various driving conditions, the brakes failed completely and resulted in crashes along with significant damage to the vehicles.
- Airbag failure and airbag sensor malfunction: A couple of cases regarding airbag failures are present for the 2014 Murano. In one case, the owner suffered a sternum fracture due to the airbag failure during the crash while in another case, the injuries were less severe. Apart from these, a faulty airbag sensor was also reported by a few owners where the front passenger’s side airbag warning light came on and continued to blink. The concerned dealerships detected that the airbag sensors were faulty and replaced them
Electrical problems
- Power steering failure: Nissan did issue a recall for this problem while several owners of the 2014 Murano already faced the issue. According to the complaints, while driving the power steering became hard making it difficult to maneuver the vehicle, posing a serious safety risk as well.

Should you buy a used Nissan Murano?
The Nissan Murano might make you raise your eyebrows with its front-end design but once you look beyond that, it is a brilliant crossover for families. The sophistication of the crossover starts appealing to you the moment you open the doors and after starting to drive it, a luxury car-like feeling cocoons you as well. On the reliability part, the crossover holds up pretty well but the current model has seen some issues with its CVT units, power steering system, and the sun visors on the inside. If you’re planning to get a used example, make sure to check it out thoroughly before bringing it along. While the sun visor defect is an easy fix, stay away from the units having the CVT issues as well as the power steering issues.
