Volvo stressing on electric powertrain for their car is nothing new. Not only have we seen the increasing number of PHEV and EV cars released by Volvo in the recent past, but even Volvo has openly declared its intention of a more sustainably powered future, What is new, though, is that Volvo for the first time has incorporated the bland and boxy family-friendly minivan design for one of their cars. The 2024 Volvo EM90 is not only Volvo’s first minivan but it may also be one of the most luxurious minivans in the world.

Over the past few years, Volvo has increasingly started focusing on EVs and PHEVs, a phenomenon that we noticed with Volvo’s 2024 lineup price list as well as some of the cars introduced for the 2024 model year like the Volvo XC60 Recharge and the XC40 Recharge. However, while the two SUVs run on a hybrid powertrain and are based on a gasoline version of the same car, the 2024 Volvo EM90 is a fully electric-powered minivan. The EV minivan may have a lot of high-tech futuristic elements, but it still has the same bland and boxy design as most minivans.
The 2024 EM90 is based on the Zeekr 009, a Chinese electric-powered minivan built by Geely Automobiles, which also happens to be the parent company of Volvo. However, the EM90 comes with a more calm and sophisticated design than the Chinese brother.

What really stands out about the EM90 is the interiors that Volvo has described as a “comfortable living room on the move”. This also means that the 268-horsepower single electric motor will not even come close to a Porsche Taycan-like performance, but will cruise very comfortably at steady speeds and soak in the road's potholes and bumps like they are nothing.
The levels of luxury that have been fitted inside the cabin are way above the category of what we have seen in the Volvo S90 and S90 Recharge. The EM90 includes lounge-like seating in the cabin along with captain's chairs in the 2nd row, a 15.6-inch entertainment system for the 2nd row, and a 15.4-inch infotainment system that will make you feel like you are sitting in a Tesla. The sound cancellation in the cabin is top-notch while the panoramic sunroof only ups the luxury factor.
The Volvo EM90’s interiors are very similar to that of the Zeekr 009. In fact, the two minivans even share the same platform and the only areas of difference can be seen in the exterior designs. However, the EM90 comes with Volvo’s pathological need for safety with even the body being built out of stronger materials for the protection of both the passengers and the battery.

Volvo, as we saw is bringing in quite a lot of changes for 2024, which includes the introduction of their first-ever minivan that too with an all-electric powertrain. The minivan not only beats the comfort and features of regular high-tech luxury cars but also pushes forward Volvo’s philosophy and aim towards a more PHEV and EV-based future. Unfortunately, the Volvo EM90 will only be launched in China where the luxury minivan is a very popular segment. Volvo has not yet confirmed whether the EM90 will land on our shores or not. However, we do wish to see the luxury cabin make its way into future Volvo cars.
