Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce that all Tesla cars in the US with the capability of FSD (Full Self Driving) will be enabled for a one-month trial. This announcement comes after a leaked email from Musk to its employees, directing them to install the FSD V12.3.1 and allow free trials to customers. This strategy aims to promote the sales of its FSD technology which allows for semi-autonomous driving.
After months of delay, the free trial announcement was made after the FSD Beta V12 software was finally released. The new software despite significant improvements still counts under the “Level 2” system where the driver is completely responsible for the car's actions. Nonetheless, Tesla aims to increase its sales of its FSD technology which it claims to reach up to level five in the upcoming years.
Another reason behind the FSD trial is to allow customers who have never experienced the technology because of its hefty price. The FSD has been available for purchase at $12,000 which previously used to cost around $15,000. Owners can also avail a subscription model for $199/month. Tesla has not had much success selling the technology and has had a fair share of attempts in the past to boost sales including 3 months of free FSD which can also be availed now if you use a referral code from an existing owner.
While the new strategy looks tempting, we’ll have to wait and see whether the FSD will finally turn out to be profitable for the automaker or not.
