Hyundai has issued a recall for almost 1,00,000 of its EVs due to potential power loss. The recalled cars were produced between 2022 to 2024 with most of the production taking place in Hyundai’s South Korea-based manufacturing plants. The concerned cars in case of a blown fuse will find its ICCU stop charging the 12-volt auxiliary battery. This inability will cause the car to lose power.
The issue first came to Hyundai’s notice when it examined ICCU-related warranties in October 2022. This was followed by a complaint registered for an Ioniq 5 which alleged loss of power. Hyundai's investigation revealed that the fail-safe mode, which allows for a total drive time of up to 45 minutes after the 12-volt battery is used, witnesses a uniform decrease in motive power which in turn can increase the risk of a crash.
The recall includes 2023-2024 Genesis GV60, 2023-2024 Genesis GV70 EV, 2023-2024 Genesis GV80 EV, 2022-2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5, and 2023-2024 Hyundai IONIQ 6. Of the 98,878 vehicles under the recall, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 produced between October 2021 and February 2024 constitutes the highest number of units, totaling 69,316.
As for the affected owners, Hyundai plans to notify both them and the dealerships by May 14, 2024. The concerned owners will be required to take their vehicle to their nearest dealership where the software will be updated free of cost.
