It might disappoint the enthusiasts and the purists to see a compact SUV wearing the iconic badge “Eclipse”. The Mitsubishi Eclipse is no more a sports coupe and the Japanese manufacturer has been selling this SUV with the name Eclipse Cross since 2018. The 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross surely is a good-looking SUV but a base price of $23,595 makes this car much more expensive than its rivals like the Mazda CX-3, the Subaru Crosstrek, and the Chevrolet Trax. As per NHTSA, the Eclipse Cross has only a single recall and 5 total complaints but does not have star ratings, which raises a concern in people’s minds. Before we go any further, let’s look at the complaints and recall the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has.
User complaints and problems
Electrical Problems
- Mirror – The mirror motor failed which cut the visibility of vehicles behind and this leaves the driver in a very unsafe situation as making turns and switching lanes without a proper view only increases the risk of a crash.
- Headlights – The driver reports state that the headlights failed all of a sudden when driving and there have been situations where the car was in a remote area while the headlights gave up leading to a crash as there was barely any visibility.
Mechanical Problems
- Brakes – When taking a turn, the owner started applying the brakes to slow down but the pedal felt mushy and the brakes weren’t responding. The owner tried pumping the pedal multiple times before it finally engaged the brakes and slowed the car down.
- Steering – The car automatically sticks to one side and also sways from one side to another by itself. The dealers examined the car and no solution was provided. They claimed the car to be absolutely normal.
Interior Problems
- Airbag sensors – The airbag sensors are very sensitive and get activated even if a mobile phone is placed on the passenger seat while charging. The airbag light turns on and displays the fasten seatbelt message as if someone is seated and this issue doesn't arise as soon as the mobile phone is picked off of the seat.
- Fuel gauge – The gauge displays faulty readings and leaves the driver clueless about how much fuel is remaining. This issue has landed a few owners stranded as they ran out of fuel which wouldn’t have happened if the fuel gauge wasn’t faulty.

Prolonged braking by collision avoidance system |
A faulty forward collision mitigation system and ECU software can lead to applying brakes longer than needed. The rapid deceleration can increase the chance of getting rear-ended by another vehicle. |
The dealers will reprogram the FCM-ECU software with the updated version. |
Should you buy the 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross?
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross hasn’t sold large numbers like its rivals and that gives away a lot about if you should really buy the Eclipse Cross. The competitors in this segment offer a far better deal except for the Chevrolet Trax which is weak and no fun to drive. The Mitsubishi is almost $2,000 costlier than the competition and we really don’t see a valid point that justifies the extra bills. The Eclipse Cross sure does look good but if you are looking for an SUV that has a powerful fun drive character, we suggest checking other brands and as far as reliability goes, the competition is reliable too and manages to have minimum recalls but they all have a 5-star safety rating from NHTSA which the Mitsubishi misses out on.
