Overview

The 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a compact hatchback offered in 3 trims, starting off at a base MSRP of $18,999. For that price, it mainly competes with the Honda Civic Coupe, the Kia Forte coupe, and the Mazda RX-8 coupe. Between 3 trims, the Eclipse offers 2 powertrains. The base engine is a 2.4L Inline-4 capable of making 162 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. If more power is required, there is also a 265 horsepower-making 3.8L V6 engine. The former engine is either mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission whereas the latter is connected to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The Eclipse reaches 60 mph from zero in 8.4 seconds on its base engine, which gets pumped up to 6.3 seconds with the 3.8L V6 engine. Depending on the powertrain, the Eclipse can manage a combined fuel economy between 20 and 23 mpg. While we're on the topic of choices, the 5 striking colors the Eclipse comes in really pull you towards itself.

Buying Advice

If you are not bothered by the base engine acceleration, we suggest the middle GS Sport trim which includes all the entry-level GS’s features plus a power sunroof, a backup camera, heated front seats, and more. However, if you have a flexible budget and want better performance then the top-ranging GT trim is the right choice.
