Overview

Although Maybach is not among the most successful luxury car brands in the United States when you look at the sales figures, they have quite a few impressive cars in their lineup. The 2012 Maybach Landaulet comes as a limited edition model of the Maybach 62 S and is already quite a luxurious sedan in itself. The Maybach Landaulet is based on the S-Class sedan but makes some luxurious additions to the car to justify its expensive price tag. The 2012 Maybach Landaulet price starts at an MSRP of $1,380,000.

It is powered by a mighty 6.0-liter V12 engine producing 620 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. The Maybach 62 Landaulet comes in a convertible body style, which allows the rear passengers to enjoy an open-air drive. Although the 2012 Maybach Landaulet didn't have any direct competition, cars like the 2012 Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and the 2012 Bentley Mulsanne offer similar features and luxury amenities as the Maybach. The Maybach 62 Landaulet images won't do justice to this super rare car. So check out the video by YouCar to see the car in its full glory.

Buying Advice

The 2012 Maybach Landaulet comes in a single trim level that packs all the top-of-the-line luxury features you expect from a luxury limousine. You can not keep it unnoticed on the road just by looking at the length of the car and that means you have enough space to sleep for the night in the rear seat of the car. It also gets all the modern creature comforts as a part of the standard package. You can customize the interior of the car to your specific requirements too.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2012 Maybach Landaulet is a limited edition variant of the Maybach 62 S. The biggest advantage of getting the Maybach Landaulet over the regular variant is its convertible rooftop. Under the hood of the Maybach Landaulet, you get a 6-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine that makes more than 600 horsepower. However, performance is not the focus of Maybach Landaulet and it focuses purely on comfort. It is an easy-driving car that will not make you tired even after a long drive. But on the contrary, do not expect an engaging driver from the 2012 Maybach Landaulet. It remains a good choice for those who want a rare car with excellent comfort and luxury inside the cabin.

Features

The 2012 Maybach Landaulet is a limited edition car and that means you will not get many trim levels to choose from. It is the top-of-the-line trim level that gets all the bells and whistles. You do not have to rely on upgrades to get the more premium features but all of them come as standard. You even get an optional massive 19-inch TV mounted for the rear seat passengers where you can watch your favorite shows while your chauffeur takes you to your destination. There are plenty of other creature comforts and entertainment features like a 21-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system. On top of that, the Maybach Landaulet also offers plenty of customization options for those who want further personalization.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The 2012 Maybach Landaulet is one of the rarer luxury sedans that cost more than a million dollars. The buyers who are spending so much money on their cars will not be worried much about the fuel economy figures. Still, the Maybach Landaulet manages to return a respectable fuel economy figure of 10 mpg in the city, 16 mpg on the highway, and 12 mpg of combined fuel economy. The fuel economy might not sound like much but you will have to consider the massive size of the engine and the weight of the car too. However, the Maybach Landaulet compensates for it pretty well with its huge fuel tank capacity of 29.1 gallons. That helps the Landaulet achieve a maximum highway driving range of 466 miles on a full tank.

All the cars in the competition come with massive engines under the hood and deliver pretty impressive performance. The meaning of good fuel efficiency changes here as you can not compare the economy of these cars to something like a Civic or Corolla. The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and the Bentley Mulsanne come with similar fuel efficiency figures. However, the Bentley Mulsanne takes the lead with a larger fuel tank capacity which results in a better driving range on a full tank. Although the Maybach Landaulet comes with the least fuel efficiency figures in the competition, it delivers the best driving range thanks to its largest fuel tank capacity.

Interior
9.0/10

The moment you get in the cabin of the front row of the Maybach Landaulet, you might not see the same level of sophistication that you expect from a luxury sedan. The front row of the Maybach Landaulet resembles the interior layout of the previous generation of the Mercedes S-Class. It feels quite basic for a million-dollar car. But the real party awaits in the rear row of the Maybach Landaulet. You can either get a two-seat or three-seat configuration in the rear. But going with the two-seat option gives you access to a refrigerator in the center. It also gets the control for dual-zone climate control in the rear. You get a reclining seat with footrest so comfort is not a problem in the rear. You can turn down the roof to enjoy the sunshine inside the cabin.

The Maybach Landaulet offers a plethora of space inside the rear row of the car. The front row also offers plenty of space but that does not matter much to the buyers in this section. It also gets the best cargo area in the competition. The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe gets a slightly lower legroom for the rear seat passengers. The Phantom Drophead Coupe also gets the lowest cargo room in the competition. The Bentley Mulsanne on the other hand is the only car in the competition that can accommodate five passengers on paper as standard. But the interior dimensions are not available for the same. The Bentley Mulsanne gets a slightly smaller cargo area than the Maybach Landaulet.

Standout interior features:

  • Heated seats in front and rear
  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Fully reclining power rear seats
  • Nappa leather upholstery
  • Front-seat memory settings
  • Active air filtration

2012 Maybach Landaulet Infotainment System

The 2012 Maybach Landaulet gets many screens inside the cabin for cabin control and entertainment purposes. The Maybach Landaulet comes with a screen mounted in the center console of the front row. Other than that, you also get two other 9.5-inch screens in the rear seats where you can connect DVDs to watch your favorite movies or videos. But the best part is that you can get an optional 19-inch TV at the rear mounted on the partition between both seats in the rear. There are plenty of options to keep you entertained inside the cabin. It also gets an inbuilt navigation system. The infotainment system supports an auxiliary audio jack, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio. It also gets a 21-speaker Bose surround audio system.

Standout infotainment system:

  • Two 9.5-inches screens
  • Optional 19-inch TV
  • Auxiliary audio jack
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Satellite Radio
  • 21-speaker Bose surround audio system

Exterior
9.0/10

Exterior styling is a subjective thing and the definition of good and bad exterior styling is different for every individual. Still, it is hard to say that many people will love the way that the Maybach Landaulet looks from the outside. The exterior design also resembles the previous generation of the Mercedes S-Class. The Maybach Landaulet does not look bad either and it is the kind of design that will remain unnoticed quite easily. But the buyers spending such a hefty amount would love a more classic and sophisticated look. You can open or close the roof for the rear seat passengers in less than 20 seconds. There is also a wind deflector that automatically comes up when you cross the speed of 40 miles per hour.

The Maybach Landaulet is a massive car and no car in the competition comes even close to the Landaulet when you look at the overall length of the car. The Maybach Landaulet is the longest car in the competition with a length of over 240 inches. When you compare it with the second-longest car in the competition which is the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, it is less than 221 inches long. It is still a very long car but the difference is quite big when you compare it against the Maybach Landaulet. The Maybach Landaulet also gets the longest wheelbase in the competition over 150 inches. The Bentley Mulsanne remains the lightest and most compact car in the competition.

Standout exterior features:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge headlamps
  • Auto-leveling headlamps
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Power-closing and power-opening rear roof
  • Auto-dimming, power, heated side-view mirrors

Safety
9.0/10

There is not much data available on the safety of the Maybach Landaulet as it is a rare car. But since it is based on the Maybach 62 S which is considered pretty good in terms of safety, you should not be worried about the safety of the car much. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) do not test such expensive and rare cars for their crash test rating so you do not have that for your reference. But it gets plenty of standard safety features with the car which should protect you in case of a crash. It also gets some of the active safety features as a part of the standard package to keep you safe.

Safety features include:

  • Daytime running lights
  • Four-wheel antilock brakes with traction control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Front and rear side-impact airbags
  • Side curtain airbags
  • Electronic stability system

Competition
8.0/10

2012 Maybach Landaulet vs. 2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

The 2012 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe costs less than half the price of the Maybach Landaulet. The Maybach Landaulet offers more space in the rear seats which means you get more space to stretch your legs in the cabin. It is also quicker than the Phantom Drophead Coupe if that matters to any buyer in the segment. But when you look at the overall package that both these convertible luxury sedans offer for the price, the Phantom Drophead Coupe looks like a more attractive package. It comes with a more sophisticated design inside the cabin and the same continues to the exterior of the car too. The choice boils down to which one appeals more to you.

2012 Maybach Landaulet vs. 2012 Bentley Mulsanne

The Bentley Mulsanne is the most affordable car in the competition. The Bentley Mulsanne offers most of what the Maybach Landaulet offers for one-third of its price. The Bentley Mulsanne is the quickest car in the competition and also offers quite a luxurious cabin. It is a lot shorter than the Maybach Landaulet which affects the space inside the cabin but the space does not feel cramped at all. But those who want the extra space to get a comfortable sleep inside the cabin of their car can go for the Maybach Landaulet. It is also the rarer car of the two which makes it a more aspirational option between the two.

Final Verdict

The 2012 Maybach Landaulet is a rare luxury sedan based on the Mercedes S-Class. It comes with an immensely powerful 6-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine under its hood that produces more than 600 horsepower. The performance is not the center of attraction for the Maybach Landaulet. However, it comes with pretty quick acceleration for such a long car. The Maybach Landaulet gets everything that you expect from a luxury sedan in the cabin but you have to make some compromises as well. The cabin layout feels a bit basic in the front row and the exterior design is also not much different from the Mercedes S-Class. But the rear seat gets all the amenities that you have in your living room like two spacious and comfortable reclining seats and a refrigerator to keep your beverages cool. You can also equip an optional 19-inch TV in the rear seats to get the complete living room experience. If all that sounds interesting to you, you can consider getting the 2012 Maybach Landaulet.
