Having traded up from a Chevy Colorado, I found a lot to like about the GMC Canyon Denali - The ride is very good, there's plenty of power from the V6, and overall it's just nicer. It's a practical and nice Read More

The GMC Canyon is a midsize truck that picks up some design cues from its bigger brother, the GMC Sierra, and has been in the market since 2004. The 2019 GMC Canyon is known to have very friendly road manners but this truck is also known for its reliability and the NHTSA reports state that the canyon has 0 recalls and just 4 registered complaints for the 2019 model year. Even though the Canyon is a great truck, the high price tag lets the competitors like the Chevrolet Colorado, the Toyota Tacoma, and the Nissan Frontier give a tough time to the Canyon. Even though there are just 4 registered complaints on this truck, let's go through them along with a few other issues that the owners have been facing.

User complaints and problems

Electrical Problems

  • Sofware - The users reported stating that the infotainment system displayed a message requesting the password after a software update. This was linked to the connected service but even after clicking on the “do not remind anymore” option, the message kept reappearing.

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine – The owners stated that there was a loud clunk from the engine bay during a cold start and the vibrations would seep through the entire cabin.
  • Fuel system – The car was reported to catch fire on its own while it was parked on the street and the entire truck was destroyed. The fire department had ruled the cause as unknown. The cabin and the bed were completely destroyed and there seemed to be no issues with the engine compartment.
  • Transmission – The gears slip when driving on an incline and at times the transmission hesitates and shifts harshly. This makes the vehicle stall when accelerating from a full stop at a traffic signal. The dealers replaced the transmission fluid but that did not completely solve the problem as the low gear shifts still feel rough.

Interior Problems

  • GPS - Users noticed the navigation system went off very often while driving and also failed to provide directions. This misled many drivers to the wrong locations.
  • Phone pairing - The contacts aren't shown on the infotainment after pairing the phone to the truck making it a hassle when it comes to the call feature as it's impossible to know who is calling until you pick up the phone.

Recalls

There aren’t any recalls for the 2019 GMC Canyon yet.

Should you buy the 2019 GMC Canyon?

The 2019 GMC Canyon is an upscale truck compared to its rivals and it’s evident that GMC has managed to put out a very reliable product as it hasn’t been recalled so far. We would suggest buying the GMC Canyon for cabin quality and comfort as well as reliability but a close cousin of this truck, the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado, starts at $21,300 which is $5,000 lesser than the GMC offers the exact same mechanical setup. It is economical to pick the Chevy but the extra $5 grand brings in a well-refined and premium interior along with some additional features. A tip we would suggest would be to check the used car market to find a low run Canyon as that would save you some bucks. Nonetheless, we can assure you that it wouldn’t be a disappointing purchase if you pick the 2019 GMC Canyon.
