2022 Ferrari SF90 Spider Plug-in Hybrid Release Date

No official date has been declared by Ferrari.

The Ferrari SF90 Spider gets power from a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine which alone can produce 769 horsepower but this engine is connected with three electric motors. 

Between the engine and the eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle is a single electric motor and the other two e-motors are installed at the front axle. With this hybrid setup, SF90 produces a net output of 986 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Ferrari has given a smart AWD drivetrain to the SF90 Spider and transmission duties are done by the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That said, in the purely electric mode, SF90 Spider can go up to 83 mph. 

The Ferrari SF90 Spider has an engine sitting very low into the car in order to lower the center of gravity which provides stability. One of the best things driving about the SF9 Spider is the insane precision of the steering wheel. Despite it being a Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle, you won’t be disappointed by its sound. It growls like a lion on the hunt. Even though handling is extremely sharp, the ride is on the harsher side compared to the Ferrari F8. When you put the Spider in the hybrid model, the tachometer vanishes from the LCD screen. That said, even though the rear window looks extremely small from the outside, it does offer a decent amount of visibility.

Sometimes the power figures do not translate into the real performance but that’s not the case with SF90 Spider. With such massive engine output, it reaches 60 mph from a standstill in approximately 2.5 seconds and covers the quarter-mile distance in just 9.9 seconds. Meanwhile, the rival from the McLaren is not much behind in terms of acceleration as it does the 0-60 mph 0.3 seconds later than the SF90 Spider. The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ roadster crosses the 0-60mph limit 0.1 seconds faster than the McLaren 720 S Performance Spider. Finally the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante splints from the state of rest to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and covers one fourth mile distance in 11 seconds which makes it the slowest in the competition. 

There is no official EPA fuel economy data available for the 2022 Ferrari SF90 Spider. However, data for the 2021 Ferrari SF90 Stradale is available and since both models share the same Plug-in Hybrid powertrain, we can have a rough idea about the fuel economy of the SF90 Spider if not accurate since various other factors other than engine performance also plays a crucial role in determining the fuel economy. As per EPA estimates, Stradale gives 18 MPG combined and 51 MPGe combined. We also have test data from the car and driver which estimates the approximate fuel economy to be 20 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. That said, SF90 Spider has a pure electric range of 15 miles.

Based on the fuel economy data, the McLaren 720 S Performance Spider comes out as the most fuel-efficient car in the segment which is followed by the rival from the Ashton Martin. McLaren has one MPG more in the city and combined as compared to the Ashton Martin. Meanwhile, the least fuel-efficient sports car in the competition is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ roadster but it has the biggest fuel tank while the smallest one is offered on the Ferrari SF90 Spider. 

A cabin filled with nothing but carbon fiber, leather paddings, and other high-quality material. It might not be the most comfortable cabin against the rivals but it is comfier than the LaFerrari. However, if you want an extremely pampered and lavish cabin then go across the street and buy a Rolls Royce. You get carbon fiber sport seats with power adjustment and Alcantara perforated inserts. Below your feet, you will find Alacantara floor mats. The amount of carbon fiber used is showing how far Ferrari wants to go to increase the performance by using lightweight material. That said, the overall design has a minimalistic approach. The entire cabin is void of buttons. Everyone can’t help but wonder about the stick-less gear shifter which has been swapped with sliding gear switches. Touch buttons and small touchscreens are throughout the cabin.

Want climate control, here you go on the touch screen. Wish to control outside mirrors and headlights, no problems here are touch buttons and pad over the left side of the steering wheel, you also want to see how the driver is doing and follow the navigational route, no fret look at this small rectangular touchscreen. The steering wheel also has touch-sensitive buttons to change the drive modes and to control other things including one for ignition. There is no glove box given inside and there are very few places you can use to store some stuff such as little space below the center console, nettings on the door panels, and there is only one cup holder given, well good luck with your date from Starbucks then to fight over that one cup spot. 

There is no official data available at the moment about the interior dimension of the SF90 Spider and its fellow rivals. But since Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante has allowed two more individuals in the cabin compared to other cars in the segment, it is the most spacious car in the segment. How intuitive is the 2022 Ferrari SF90 Spider plug-in hybrid’s infotainment unit?

Ferrari is expected to come with the same 16-inch HD curved display as in the 2021 model. It is right behind the steering wheel in the driver’s field of vision and displays every kind of information about the car. You also get a small touch screen which has settings for radio and navigation for the passenger. SF90 Spider also has features such as a 6-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, real-time traffic, and Apple CarPlay. Sadly, there is no Android Auto integration given. That said, in the optional features, you can get a premium Hi-Fi system. Highlights of the infotainment unit:

The Ferrari SF90 Spider is an open-top Ferrari which is basically a retractable hardtop variant or a convertible version of the Stradale which is a coupe. The exterior styling of both cars is nearly the same. The SF90 Spider’s retractable hardtop can be lowered in just 14 seconds. As per Ferrari, the hardtop system is lighter than the conventional retractable hardtop system. If we look at the side profile, it looks more like a Ferrari 458 that has been put on bulk and then cut diet. The Michelin tires promise to stick to the ground. 

The wheels are designed to work like a fan which sucks in all air and channel is along the rest of the car. There are carbon fiber air intakes on the side on the rear side. If you look at the front you will not help yourself but notice that c-shaped like sleek headlights are being shy because the hood is designed in such a way that it lets air in front from the funnel and let it pass over the car. A carbon fiber front splitter is also given at the front. On the backside, there is a titanium dual-exhaust system, suspended rear wing, and taillights which are neither round nor rectangular. 

There is a transparent carbon fiber cover given over the engine which is not just for aesthetics as it also helps the engine cool down by letting the hot air out. Two-zone bodywork is optional. Anchor-shaped grey paint livery is something that is a heritage and offered if you take the Assetto Fiorano package. 20-inch carbon fiber wheels allow SF90 Spider to run so fast, it looks as it has been melted along with the air. That said, the weight of the car gets further reduced by nearly 46 lb if you opt for the Assetto Fiorano package. Additionally, Giallo Montecarlo and Giallo Modena exterior paints are one of the main highlights of the SF90 Spider. 

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante is the heaviest in the competition whereas the McLaren 720 S Performance Spider is the lightest one. As for the Ferrari SF90 Spider, it has a curb weight of 3700 lb. More than fifty percent of the weight is distributed on the back portion of the car. Furthermore, the dwarf of the segment is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ roadster but the giraffe is from the Ashton Martin. That said, the largest wheelbase is offered on the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante and the shortest one is given on the concerned car of this article.
