Overview

Starting its journey from Maranello back in 1939, Ferrari continues to maintain its dominance in the world of performance and motorsports even to this day. Having a glorious and extensive portfolio of cars, Ferrari makes some fast and sleek grand tourers too with the Ferrari FF being an iconic example. The Ferrari Roma, yes the guys at Maranello decided to honor their country’s capital city, was first unveiled in 2019 and made its way to production and out on the roads for the 2021 model year. The Roma is based on the Portofino and is a four-seater coupe.

The 2023 Ferrari Roma will remain unchanged but it will become dearer with a price tag of $243,360. Under the hood of the car, lies the popular 3.9-liter V8 from the brand that has seen multiple applications since its launch. The car shares some of its techs and features with the SF90 Stradale such as the F1-derived transmission, F1-specced traction control, and Haptic technology for the electronic control interface. The safety part of the Roma has been kept minimal with no advanced driver assistance techs offered as standard. However, the necessary ADAS techs are offered through an optional package. In the class, the Ferrari Roma competes alongside the Aston Martin DB11, the Bentley Continental GT W12, and the Porsche 911 Turbo S.

Buying Advice

The Ferrari Roma doesn’t have any trim levels to choose from. However, we would recommend the optional ADAS package to enhance the safety of your car.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Despite the Ferrari Roma entering 2023 unchanged, this grand tourer needs no new additions in our opinion. Although this segment is not as crowded as other mainstream performance categories, the Roma has managed to set standards that other manufacturers have had to try and crack in order to survive against this Italian masterpiece. While most enthusiasts would prefer a high-revving naturally aspirated V12 engine underneath the hood, the Roma carries a rather modern twin-turbo V8 which surprisingly suits the character and vehicle type that the Roma is. We can also assure you that this downsized engine compared to other Ferrari stablemates is no less in terms of spiking up the heart rate as the car is capable of going from still to 60 MPH in under 3.5 seconds.

Features
8.0/10

The 2023 Ferrari Roma doesn't have any trim levels and sees a base price tag of $243,360. For that price, the car is equipped with some comfort and convenience features but plenty of them are offered as optional extras. The standard features include premium leather upholstery, a mix of leather and Alcantara for interior trims, heating and 18-way power adjustments for the front seats, and two-zone automatic climate control. Some tasteful optional extras include advanced Active Matrix headlamp units, Apple CarPlay, an upgraded audio system, a Sport exhaust system, a separate infotainment display screen for the front passenger, and colored brake caliper units. On the safety front, the optional ADAS package equips the car with a Frontal collision warning and mitigation system, Adaptive cruise control, Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and a Lane keeping assistance system.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

This is the part where things get interesting. The 2023 Ferrari Roma gets the tried and tested Ferrari F154 BH V8 under its hood which has a displacement of 3.9-liter and is fed via a couple of turbochargers. In this car, the motor is tuned to deliver a beefy 612 horsepower along with 561 lb-ft of torque. The turbochargers are water-cooled while the intercoolers have an air-to-air design. The lubricating system of the motor uses a dry sump unit that keeps the motor from oil starvation in case of heavy lateral acceleration. The transmission unit is an 8-speed dual-clutch unit from US’ Magna Powertrain. It is a similar F1-derived unit that does wonders on the SF90 Stradale as well. While a few rivals get AWD as standard, the Roma has an RWD layout only. In a straight line, Ferrari claims that the Roma can hit 60 mph within 3.5 seconds and can complete the quarter-mile run in under 11.5 seconds. Being a GT, the top whack of the car is limited to 199 mph only which can be extended with a speed limiter delete. Being a Ferrari motor, the tradition of having glorious mechanical sounds as well as melodious exhaust notes is very much present.

The Aston Martin DB11 has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 under its hood. Since the DB11 makes more than 100 horses less than the Roma here, it takes more than a second than the Roma to complete both the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile runs. The Bentley Continental GT has the biggest motor along with the fattest torque output figure. It makes 626 horses along with 664 lb-ft of torque, hitting 60 mph within 3.6 seconds flat. Moreover, it has a higher top speed of 204 mph too, as compared to the Roma. The Porsche 911 Turbo S veers into hypercar territory with its 640-hp output and a 2.5-second 0-60 mph sprint time. The Porsche achieves all that from a compact yet feisty 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged Flat-6 engine.

2023 Ferrari Roma Ride and Handling

Ferrari has extensive experience in making both Formula 1 and Le Mans cars hence, questioning the brand’s vehicles’ handling would be a crime. The 2023 Ferrari Roma might be based on the Portofino but weighs a significant 441 lbs less than the latter. Other than the lightweight construction, the Roma gets some cool engineering and techs to make it one of the best-handling cars in the class. The car has a Ferrari-claimed weight distribution of 50-50 at front and rear, and the rear dynamic wing provides a maximum downforce of 209 lbs when the car hits 155 mph. Along with the dynamic self-activating rear wing, the car also gets vortex generators on the underbody that further creates downforce on the front wheels to optimally balance the car. While so much goes on behind the scenes, the ride comfort is commendable though while driving at low speeds.

2023 Ferrari Roma Braking Performance

For a car producing over 600 horses and having the ability to do serious speeds within seconds, the ability to stop in time is also crucial. The 2023 Ferrari Roma gets 15.4-inch front and 14.1-inch rear rotors with carbon ceramic ventilated discs. A high-tech Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer modulates the brakes by monitoring and applying different brake pressures on individual wheels. The tech works only on the Race setting though, a first-time for a GT-badged model from Ferrari.

The Aston Martin DB11 gets sizable 15.8-inch front and smaller 14.2-inch rear rotors to handle the braking duties. Surprisingly, the DB11 comes to a complete stop from 60 mph within 110 feet sharp despite weighing more than the Roma. The Bentley Continental GT W12 is the goliath here with a massive curb weight of 5,322 lbs. Irrespective of its heft, the huge 17.3-inch rotors at the front and the 15-inch rotors at the rear manage to stop the car within 105 feet only. The Porsche 911 Turbo S has marginally smaller brakes than the Continental but it comes to a halt within 108 feet only.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

So we’re here then. The fuel economy numbers of the 2023 Roma aren’t a bit terrible considering the car packing in over 600 prancing horses. As the EPA rated it, the Roms officially return an average of 17 mpg during city driving conditions while out on the highways, the number climbs to 22 mpg. The combined mileage stands at 19 mpg and the car has a fairly-sizable 21-gallon gas tank. With the combo of its EPA ratings and gas tank capacity, the car can cover as much as 337 miles inside the city limits and about 485 miles out on the highways.

The Aston Martin DB11 benefits from its more sane powertrain setup along with fewer output figures to deliver better EPA ratings as compared to the Ferrari Roma. With the higher fuel economy ratings, the DB11 is slightly better in the driving range aspect with more range per tank-full of gasoline. The Bentley Continental GT W12 absolutely loves to drink, especially due to the deadly combo of the car’s heft and that twin-turbo W12. Due to that, the car, even though it gets a much bigger 24-gallon gas tank, has terrible driving range numbers. The Porsche 911 Turbo S trails the Ferrari Roma closely in terms of fuel economy numbers however, its much smaller gas tank of 17.6 gallons results in dismal driving figures.

Interior
8.0/10

The Ferrari Roma’s cabin is just shy of being a full-breed race car, complete with two separate cockpits for the driver and the front passenger. However, Ferrari hasn’t skimped on the luxury part to keep the weight in check, like always. The cabin has a tasteful appointment of leather and Alcantra with the seats covered in premium leather. The front seats are sports units with heating and 18-way power adjustments. The rear seats are there just to allow the car to be a 2+2 grand tourer. To deliver an unforgettable driving experience, the front seats deliver exceptional levels of support too, and you’ll practically have almost all the controls at your fingertips. The steering wheels get the iconic Manettino dial with five settings which are wet, comfort, sport, race, and ESC-off. You can also equip the interior with carbon fiber trim inserts too, to upscale the sporty appeal of the car. For practicality purposes, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and you can use the rear seats to keep your bags or other luggage items too. The cargo volume on offer is decent at 11.3 cu-ft.

The Aston Martin DB11’s cabin is everything about comfort, opulence, and class. Unlike Roma’s cabin, the DB11 gets rich leather and wooden trims and inserts, and the comfort levels are up several notches as compared to the Roma as well. The cargo capacity is on the lower side though, with only 9.5 cu-ft of space on offer. The Bentley Continental GT’s cabin can be said to be the epitome of luxury among the rivals on the list here. Starting with standard premium leather upholstery, the cabin also gets plenty of metallic, wooden, and suede trims along with providing oodles of space for both the front and rear passengers as well. The cargo capacity is solid too at 12.6 cu-ft of space on offer. The Porsche 911 Turbo S’ cabin is both elegant and sporty at the same time but gets a whole lot more customization options than any other rivals on the list. However, the Roma still leads here with its cockpit-style cabin.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Ferrari Roma include:

  • Dual-cell cockpit-style cabin
  • 18-way power-adjustable front seats with heating
  • Leather upholstery
  • Alcantara and leather interior trim inserts
  • Carbon fiber interior trims(optional)
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2023 Ferrari Roma’s infotainment system?

Since Ferrari placed the Roma as a Grand Tourer, it had to give the car some basic entertainment features. Hence, it gets a standard 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display that is vertically mounted. The interface has a basic but user-friendly layout and the touch response is smooth. The unique part is the extensive use of haptic responses that have been implemented exceptionally well. However, you won’t get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is optional. You’ll get Bluetooth, DAB radio, USB ports, and navigation as standard though. Moreover, you can also replace the standard 7-speaker audio with a premium setup from the optional features list.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Ferrari Roma include:

  • 8.4-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment display
  • Bluetooth
  • DAB radio
  • 7-speaker audio system
  • Navigation
  • Apple CarPlay

Exterior
9.0/10

Coming to the exterior of the 2023 Ferrari Roma, the brand went ahead with a different design theme for the car’s nose this time. While it might feel a bit out of place at first glance, the captivating brilliance of the complete will soon take over. Due to its grand tourer segmentation, the car has its engine mounted at the front resulting in a long hood. The LED headlamps get a two-part design and are separated with a single LED stripe in the middle. Shortly under the front grille, there is the front diffuser that runs along the side of the car too. At the rear, if you pay a bit more attention than usual, the trunk lid design, complete with the rear bumper will look a bit familiar with the rear end of the iconic 599 GTB, only it is sleeker here. The tail light units are LED units too. The car also gets a multi-angle automatically activated rear wing.

Looking at the Aston Martin DB11 will make you realize how far the Brits have come from the legendary DB4 driven by Sean Connery. The design base of the front grille remains intact but it’s sleeker, brilliantly complemented by the eye-like headlamp units, and gives the car an aggressive appeal too. The Bentley Continental GT looks as extravagant as it is on the inside. The jewel-design headlamp units along with the chrome trim on the front fascia gel well with the rich and luxurious image of the car. The Porsche 911 Turbo S looks the most uninteresting here among the rivals especially due to its understated face.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Adaptive suspension dampers
  • Hidden power-deployed rear spoiler
  • Active matrix headlights
  • Sport exhaust system
  • Carbon-fiber exterior treatments
  • Colored brake calipers

Safety
8.0/10

Exotic supercars and sports cars such as the Ferrari Roma can be an excruciatingly costly affair to crash test. However, these cars are built to last and get lightweight yet super strong construction to withstand high speeds. Even though Ferrari has kept the safety techs at a minimum to reduce driver assistance, the basics are there all right. As standard, the Roma gets F1-Trac traction control, side-slip control 6.0 technology, electronic stability control, and an anti-lock braking system. A few ADAS techs are offered as optional extras such as a forward collision mitigation system, Adaptive cruise control, Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, lane-keeping assistance, and a surround-view camera system.

Some of the standout safety features include:

  • F1-Trac traction control
  • Side-slip control 6.0
  • Electronic stability control
  • Forward collision warning and mitigation
  • Lane keeping assistance
  • Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert

Competition
8.5/10

2023 Ferrari Roma vs 2022 Aston Martin DB11

The Aston Martin DB11 showcases British excellence with its plush cabin, striking exterior design, and solid performance. While the Roma is targeted to be a more edgy grand tourer, the DB11 is more comfort-focused. However, the DB11 demands a much lesser price than the Roma but provides more than adequate goodies. The fuel economy, driving range, and braking are the areas where it beats the Roma whereas, the latter clearly has an upper hand in the performance and handling department. Moreover, the Roma gets some high-tech systems such as an F1-derived transmission and underbody vortex generators that aid the car in achieving more extreme handling as compared to the DB11.

2023 Ferrari Roma vs 2022 Bentley Continental GT W12

The Bentley Continental GT W12 is extravagant in almost every sense such as having a mammoth twin-turbo W12 pushing out some segment-leading power and torque figures. Moreover, the interior of the Continental is in a different league as compared to the Roma’s cabin, since the former is completely focused on the comfort and indulgence part. However, the Continental can give the Roma a run for its money on a straight line but would lose out on the track due to the latter’s cutting-edge handling techs.

2023 Ferrari Roma vs 2022 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The Porsche 911 Turbo S combines the best of both worlds by offering a cozy cabin with some neck-snapping acceleration times. Moreover, the 911 goes around the tracks like anything and can chase down the Roma quite easily. The 911 also gets a plethora of customization options right from the factory whereas the Roma only has a limited number of options to choose from. Still, the Roma retains its position as a better-handling car and has a better brand value too.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

Thankfully the Ferrari Roma isn’t a limited production car, unlike a few of its rivals out there. For a sticker price exceeding a couple of hundred grand, the Roma gets you quite close to the supercar experience while being a grand tourer itself. Moreover, you get an unexpectedly spacious cabin along with a spacious boot, now you can escape the daily chaos of life with style and luggage. If you’re not a fan of all those high-tech handling aids and prefer more comfort, the Aston Martin DB11 can be a great alternative.
