Overview

Creating a successor of a legendary car is a Himalayan task for any car maker. Ferrari had to face this challenge while bringing out the replacement for the legendary F12 Berlinetta. Ferrari took this challenge head-on and managed to pull off an even more amazing car in the form of the 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast. The 2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast price starts at $336,962 and rivals the likes of the McLaren 720S and the Lamborghini Aventador S.

Named after the legendary Ferrari Superfast from 1957, the new beast from the Maranello-based manufacturer houses a 6.5L Naturally Aspirated V12 motor that belts out 789 hp and 530 lb-ft of torque. Probably the last Ferrari to be powered by a naturally aspirated V12 motor, the 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast is truly a special car. Comparative Analysis against Competition

First revealed in the Geneva Motor show in 2017, the 812 Superfast gets its name from the Superfast named Cars (starting with the 1956 410 Superfast) of the late 1950's that used to compete in Races around the World. The 8 in the 812 translates to the 800HP that the car produces and the12 symbolizes the V12 that this Beast engulfs in it. Ferrari say that the Engine in the 812 is the most powerful V12 that the Company has ever built It starts at $335,000 which starts going up as per the Customer's customization options.

Fuel Economy
3.5/10

Well, if you are planning on buying the 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast or lucky enough to get one, MPG Figures might be one of the last things on your mind considering the V12 engine. However, Ferrari has added a lot of Electronics and reduced the Chassis weight as compared to the F12 that makes the Ferrari one of the most Fuel Efficient V12's out in the market.

In our comparison, it gets only beaten by the McLaren which is obvious as the McLaren uses a Smaller Turbocharged Engine that delivers better fuel economy. However, it comfortably beats its arch nemesis, the Aventador by a good margin.

Seating and Comfort

Ferrari has paid a lot of Attention in appointing a Supercar Worthy Interior to the 812 Superfast. The Carbon Seats themselves are Low Slung to keep the Center of Gravity low and are Lightweight to keep the weight of the Car down. Leave aside the cheap looking and difficult to attach Seat Belts, the Seats themselves have been contoured with Leather which can be customized as per the Buyer's preference. The Seats are comfortable for Supercar levels and offer good levels of Comfort for long runs in the Car. The Air Cons have horizontal dash loops that can be moved in any direction to channel air in any direction you want.

Cargo Space

Ferrari doesnt boast about the Cargo space of the 812 Superfast and neither mentions it on its website. But, the 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast has decent space for luggage in the back which should be good enough for a Weekend Drives or Short Trips.

Interior Features and Infotainment

One of the most Striking Features of the All New 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast is the Interior layout. Most of the Interior features can be controlled by buttons present on the steering wheel as Ferrari always focuses the cabin to be built around the Driver. There is no fancy touch screen infotainment system like other rival supercars.

However there is a Screen that has Satellite navigation, Driver Info Display containing all information regarding the car behind the Steering wheel on the Dashboard. Telephony Controls, Bluetooth, Cruise Control Button, Traction Control Button, Driving Mode selector, Turn Indicators, Headlamp Switches and Paddle Shifters are present on the STEERING WHEEL itself so that the Driver always keeps his focus on the Steering wheel and never gets his Hands off it. The Audio Quality is good and has been well tuned to contour your Ears.

There is a Small Screen in front of the Passenger's dashboard that showcases Engine RPM Speed, Gear and Speed. It also allows the Passenger to control Media, Navigation and check various performance parameters like Traction Control, Stability Control and a lot more.

Exterior
9.0/10

Following in the tyre tracks of a long line of magnificent front-engined, two-seat Ferrari GTs, the 812 Superfast channels the 365 GTB/4 Daytona in looks and the Enzo in spirit for a scintillating blend of everyday useability and supercar incredibility drive.co.au

Dimensions and Weights

The 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast is in no way a Small Car. It has a Huge Bonnet underneath which resides the big V12 power plant and helps Ferrari achieve the 47% Front and 53% Rear weight balance. The Car continues to be Bigger than the Car it replaces-the F12, hence making maneuvering this gargantuan Entity across the city or on crowded places a Complex job.

The Turning Circle is just Ridiculous and will take some skill to make U-Turns or take tight turns in a City. The McLaren gets a clear edge over its rivals in terms of movement in and around the city. The Lamborghini is as cumbersome to maneuver around the city as the Ferrari and both Italians, struggle to keep up with the McLaren's maneuverability around the city.

Exterior Features

As with many Ferrari's of the past starting from the Legendary 458 Italia, the 812 Superfast is an Engineer's Marvel and an Artist's Masterpiece. The 812 grabs Eyeballs wherever you take it and dont be shocked if you see some people following your car on your Rear View Mirror. Other Features include

  • LED Headlamps and Tail Lamps with LED DRL signature
  • 3 Active Flaps on the Rear Diffuser that open up to 14 degrees to reduce drag
  • High Resolution Front Parking Camera and Rear Parking Camera
  • Sculpted Side Doors and Outside Rear View Mirrors to increase Aerodynamics and Down force
  • 20 Pirelli P Zero Tires for added grip on road
  • Vents behind the front wheel to suck high pressure air from wheel arches and channel it along the doors
  • Vents sculpted near the Headlamps on the Bonnet to suck air from the Outside and aid in Engine Cooling and improve Aerodynamics while reducing Drag and improving down force.

Safety
4.5/10

Like other Supercars, Ferrari does not have a Safety section in its brochure. The IIHS and the NHTSA have not tested the Ferrari however there are good amount of Safety features that would keep the driver safe at all times. There are lot of Driver aids and features on offer that intervene at the right time for when the systems detect some weird behavior.

Some of the Safety Features on the Ferrari include

  • Side Slip Control version 5
  • Electronic Stability Program 9.1
  • 3rd Gen Electronic Control Differential
  • Brembo Extreme Design Carbon Ceramic Disc Brakes
  • 4 Airbags with ABS and EBD
  • Crumple Zones on the Bonnet that absorb impacts at high speeds effectively

Ferrari 812 Superfast vs. McLaren 720S

McLaren claim that scientifically, their Cars are better than Ferraris of the same segment in every parameter. This is mostly true with the 720s as well. It has better acceleration, lesser weight and better handling manners than the Ferrari. However, a Super Car isnt just about being ahead in numbers. The Ferrari 812 superfast looks like a proper Supercar imbibing with itself Years of Ferrari's Racing Legacy and History. Also, the McLaren has been built to delight the Environmentalists but the Ferrari is for Automobile Purists who still favor the Sound of the Big Bashing naturally aspirated V-12's rather than Puny turbocharged Motors.

Ferrari 812 Superfast vs. Lamborghini Aventador S

When we talk about rivalry in the Automobile Industry, few rivalries stand out. One of them being between Lamborghini and Ferrari. The never ending feud between these 2 brands have resulted in some of the most iconic cars of all time. The Lamborghini Aventador S comes as a Natural Rival to the 812 Superfast as both have similar configuration engines, seating capacities, performance and Handling. However, the Aventador S only comes in all wheel Drive Configuration and the 812 in Rear Wheel Drive Configuration. So, if lap times is what you are after, the Lamborghini should be your weapon of choice. If however you strictly want to have a lot of fun on the track, the Ferrari is what will do the job best for you.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast is the best naturally aspirated V12 power Supercar that has ever come out of Maranello. With the current emission norms paving the way out for Big naturally aspirated Motors, Ferrari has ensured that they give a befitting farewell to the Legendary V12 motor. The 2017 812 Superfast handles like a dream, drives like a prancing horse and is comfortable as a luxury saloon. So, if you want to own a part of history and legacy with you, there is no better Car to own right now than the 2017 Ferrari 812 Superfast.
