The M badge has carried the performance segment of BMW throughout decades and with the 2022 BMW 2-Series, the German auto giant has introduced their entry-level two-door performance car. The 2022 BMW M240i comes with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine that produces 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and is available in both rear and all-wheel drive. When looking for a 2-door performance car with a fair bit of practicality on offer, the BMW M240i is possibly one of the best options available. The turbocharged engine delivers quick acceleration and linear performance. Although the 2022 version does get some updates, it is a mixed bag. While ride and handling see much improvement than the previous versions, discontinuation of the convertible body style and the rear seat being more cramped both in terms of legroom and headroom might upset a lot of potential buyers. On the other hand, the interiors boast excellent build quality and upscale ergonomics.

But is it a reliable option for a high-performance car? Here we try to take a detailed look at some of the problems with the 2022 BMW M240i, its recalls, and user complaints.

2022 BMW M240i User Complaints and Problems

Engine and Mechanical Problems

  • Wheels - An owner complained that they had two rim fractures on two separate tires within a period of two months. The first time it happened the owner had the rim refurbished. In the second event which was on an entirely different tire, the edge fractured in the center and destroyed the tire.
  • Airbags - Some owners have had complaints regarding the passenger airbag malfunction light.
  • Exterior lighting - Another owner complained that the instrument gauges for speed and tach are not backlit and are not appropriate under daytime dim lighting conditions. The owner also added that the numerals do not contrast with the dial and no lighting condition will light the dials enough to see during the day as the dial appears “Blacked Out”.

Should you buy the 2022 BMW M240i?

The BMW M240i succeeds in pretty much all departments. The performance offered is commendable, the interiors uphold the brand name and the price tag is reasonable. Although like any other car, the M240i also has its shortcoming like its rear space which would be uncomfortable for any adult passengers. However, these shortcomings aren't a dealbreaker, especially for people who have performance as their priority. For a high-performance car, the data available for the car's reliability is minimal as the 2022 model is relatively new to the market. Although many owners of the BMW M240i over the years have had some common issues regarding the engine of the car as cases of engine stalling or shutting off unexpectedly have been reported in addition to instances of oil leaks. Some owners have also faced issues with the brakes of the car including squeaking or grinding noises and reduced braking performance. Issues with the transmission and suspension have also been recorded. Regardless, the 2022 BMW M240i is an excellent choice for a performance car and the 2022 model emerges victorious against its competitors. Also getting an M-branded variant at a reasonable price tag is the cherry on top.
