The elegant Audi Q7 is one of the finest 7-seater midsize SUVs around the market. This German stalwart has been a reliable presence in the premium midsize crossover SUV industry for quite a while. The Q7’s sophisticated design and handsome interior bits and technology are all nostalgic traits of the older variants. The Q7 includes plenty of modern gadgetry as well, to transform your daily commute into a high-tech journey. The Q7's everlasting presence on the market is now in danger of fading off, as rivals like the Volvo XC90, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class keep getting better every year.

The 2020 Q7 retains the same values of sophistication and simplicity with its exterior and interior design. There are quite a few upgrades on the technology front as well, which enhances the overall driving experience. The Q7’s raw athleticism comes from its turbocharged inline-4 engine, which is a whole new level of excitement for buyers. However, the premium elements of the 2020 model year are also sensitive to the degradation imposed by time and other external factors. Will the 2020 Audi Q7 prove to be a reliable SUV to own in the long term?

2020 Audi Q7 User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - In the past, the Audi Q7 was notorious for an engine misfiring issue. Drivers often reported that the car would shudder while driving when they start the engine cold. On further inspection, it was found that one or two random cylinders were delayed in firing up, because of the build-up of poor carbon or fuel in those areas. Cleaning up the engine valves is one expensive solution while updating the Power control module is another way.
  • Fuel/propulsion system - Older Q7 models often faced a high risk of fuel leakage from the left and right fuel rails. The fuel rail supplies the fuel injectors with the required fuel for injection, so any leakage can potentially result in a fire. Audi resolved this issue through a recall. Nevertheless, you should inspect your vehicle regularly for the smallest hints of fuel leakage.

Electrical Problems

  • Forward collision avoidance - One complainant reported that the forward collision system worked abnormally on the SUV. The cruise control system would automatically adjust the speed limit the moment it encounters a speed sign on a cross street. For instance, the SUV automatically applied the brakes after it detected a 45 MPH sign on a cross street despite the speed limit being set to 75 MPH on the freeway. This can be quite a sketchy situation for the driver as the automatic speed adjust cannot be turned off as well.

Safety Problems

  • Brakes - One Q7 owner complained about the squeakiness of the rear brakes before taking the SUV for a ride in cold weather. However, there have been very few reports of any braking system problems with the Audi Q7.
  • Wheel alignment - Most Q7 owners have to regularly repair the SUV’s wheel alignment to extend the life of their tires. Prolonged driving often results in incorrect wheel alignment by a certain angle, which may cause the SUV to drift while steering. Audi recommends getting all the wheels pointed in the right direction at regular intervals.
  • Structure - A few owners have reported the poor build quality of the Audi Q7. One driver complained about a rattling door, while the other complaint was about the discoloration of the SUV’s black optic trim. For the premium price of the Q7, the build quality definitely needs to be top-notch. Fortunately, only a few customers are struggling with build quality issues which indicates that this isn’t a significant problem.
