Compared to its cousin, the Rogue, the Nissan Murano has been a midsize SUV from the automaker that is yet to receive some decent limelight. Although the line-up has received a major and interesting update for this model year, the rise in interest in this SUV remains mostly the same as in previous years. We assume the catastrophic CVT failures reported in multiple counts on this SUV have made it quite infamous in recent times might be one reason why despite most of us rating this SUV high in our short initial tests. Although the complaint number is on the respectably low side, this one expensive failure is definitely affecting the overall appeal of this SUV, especially for those who intend to keep it long. So should you even think of putting down $39,560 on this SUV instead of better and notably more reliable options like the Ford Edge, the Chevrolet Equinox, and the Hyundai Santa Fe? Let’s take a looks at the problems with the Nissan Murano and give it a final decision.
2015 Nissan Murano User Complaints and Problems
Mechanical Complaints
- Engine issues- Nissan’s VQ series of engines are usually mechanically robust, but some 2015 Nissan Murano have been complaining about power loss, occasional stalls, and rough idling issues. A faulty intake airflow sensor or erroneous reading from the camshaft position sensor are mostly the reasons behind these issues, which are relatively cheap and easy fixes.
- Transmission/CVT problems- The CVT unit on the 2015 Nissan Murano is known to shutter, lurch, and slip out of gear ratios when acceleration. Owners also complain about the unit violently jerking when pondering at low speeds and even casing the engine to stall when coming to a halt in drive mode. CVT issues have been something that has troubled Nissan car for a long time now and the update seem to have made it worse. Multiple owners have raised concerns about needing a new transmission under 100,000-miles at rates of over $5,000 apiece. Nissan is aware of this issue and refrains to put forward a recall or service bulletin to a remedy despite several reports and requests by owners.
Electric System complaints
- Radio issues- The radio/ navigation system on the 2015 Nissan Murano is subject to various problems. Janky radio receptivity, Sirius XM connectivity issues, and the media system remaining on when the vehicle is switched off are some common complaints reported by NHSTA. Most of these complaints could be traced back to glitch firmware and updates were made available from the dealer end.
Structural complaints
- Liftgate problems- Software issues on the power liftgate (on trim equipped) of the 2015 Nissan Murano cause it to not raise or close as intended. At times the hatch fails to open after the locks unlatch, while sometimes it stops mid-way. Reports also suggest the lid closing in on owners when the cargo is in access. A firmware reprogramming usually does the trick and drive motor replacements are pretty rare.
- Transfer case leak- Transfer case oil leaks are pretty common on the 2015 Nissan Murano. Although the damaged seal is a cheap spare, the labor charges in dismantling the powertrain to access these seals are hefty and would set back an owner something between $900 to $1,400 depending on the dealer.
Safety Complaints
- Forward Collision Brake Issue- Issues with the forward emergency braking system on the 2015 Nissan Murano, on trims equipped with that feature, have not been that uncommon. The system intermittently triggers itself when driving through snowy or muddy tracks. The front radar error warning is also a constant hassle as minor debris on the bumper can cause it to not function properly. There are workarounds to deactivate AEB, but the cruise control system disengages with it.

Should you buy a used 2015 Nissan Murano?
The Nissan Murano is the vehicle that tops our charts for the midsize SUV listing for this year. But unfortunately, even though we and the rest of the media houses found this brand new SUV to be super good in our short tests, the real-life ownership experience has been turning out to be far from acceptable than we expected, more so in the long run. Owners have been having a really hard time with the CVT units on this SUV and replacements on vehicles with mileages under 100,000-miles have been a common sight. As good as this SUV is, spending over 5 grand on transmission is something that no one wants to do. Competitors like the Edge or the Traverse do not place themselves any better when it comes to complaints, but the absence of critical failure areas makes them easier recommendations for us. The 2015 Murano is a great buy brand-new, but the uncertainty with the CVT unit makes us even question this recommendation.
