After trading in my lease early with my 2019 Ford Edge, which we loved the 2021 Escape is horrible. I hear a significant flapping and thumping noise that sounds like it comes mostly from the right rear wheel area and to a slightly lesser degree across the entire rear of the vehicle. It is a concussion type of noise and I don’t hear it when the windows are down. It does not record well, but passengersRead More

... in reverse. I could go forward if I wanted to, but silly me, I thought I was going to have a car that could do both. Took it to the dealership, but by the time they saw the car, the check engine light went out and it could go in reverse so they could not fix what they could not see. Today once again the check engine light came on and once again, the car would not go in reverse. Another trip to theRead More

Ford Motor Co. introduces the 2021 Escape intending to address the basic daily commuter needs. Besides a refined powertrain, the 2021 Ford Escape offers an array of features to choose from. The SUV further provides an economic experience with practical fuel mileage figures. The Ford Escape has vulnerabilities ranging from fuel leakages to transmission failures. Ford fails to resolve the major problems with the car due to the unavailability of parts. The NHTSA registers a count of 33 user complaints and 5 recalls for the 2021 SUV.

The Ford Escape goes up against the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Rav4, and the Chevrolet Equinox in the compact-SUV class. However, the SUV fails to make its mark due to reliability concerns. While the older generation Ford Escape was known for its bad transmission and unreliable Ecoboost engine, the 2021 Escape problems are different in nature. Check out the video below by "Marquez" from "DriveandBeDriven" where he lists the 5 major downsides of the 2021 Escape.

Key observations in the video:

  • No rear occupant alert system
  • Missing certain cooled/heating functions
  • Missing 360-degree camera system
  • Expensive optional LED headlights
  • Mismatch of interior trim pieces

User Complaints and Problems

Mechanical Problems

  • Engine - Engine stalling is a known problem with the Ford Escape. The SUV tends to lose power under driving conditions. This leads to a sharp drop in speed. Customers report a ‘STOP SAFELY NOW’ warning before stalling. A sudden loss of drive power increases the chances of a crash.
  • Brakes - Brake system problems are common with the Ford Escape. Brake fade and brake slip are the two known issues with the SUV. Brake fade results in inadequate braking and squealing during the application of brakes. Brake slip results in longer braking distances. Both these issues need the user to apply more force on the brake pedal. This is a major problem and forces a few recalls on the SUV.
  • Cooling System - The Ford Escape cooling system is prone to a drop in coolant (antifreeze) levels. This results in engine overheating. The majority of cooling system complaints report cases of a vehicle fire. This compromises the safety of the occupants.
  • Fuel leakage - Fuel leak is a major problem with the Ford Escape. Ford claims the Fuel Delivery Module defects to be the primary cause of the issue. Fuel leak complaints report many cases of vehicle fires resulting in a total loss. The issue forces the recalling of the SUV.
  • Transmission - Ford Escape customers report instances of transmission failure resulting in gear jamming. The gearbox tends to jam in the ‘park mode’ restricting gear shifting.

Electrical Problems

  • Battery - The High Voltage Battery of the SUV is prone to failure. This can lead to a potential loss of vehicle power. Sudden loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash. The fix to this requires replacing the high voltage battery.
