Overview

The 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan comes with a heavy nameplate that doesn’t speak of anything less than a luxury minivan. The value lies in the word Grand that resides deep into this car’s structure and performance. It’s a fifth-generation minivan that has been at the top of its segment for over a decade now. But don’t be fooled by how old it looks. The appearance is just a farce.

Buying Advice

Thinking of buying the Grand Caravan? Well, we’d definitely suggest you take a check on the rivals but if your heart is set on the Grand Caravan, then the mid-range SE Plus should be your pick. The SE Plus trim is pretty much basic but comes with some great features like Stow ‘n Go 2nd-row seats, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic headlamps, etc.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

When the Dodge Grand Caravan started out, it was practically the most favorite haulers of the families in the US. But be it in terms of conveniences, safety, structure, aesthetics, comfort, or technology, there’s a lot to compete over these days. However, post-2020, Dodge is probably discontinuing the Grand Caravan. Perhaps because minivans that have aged are banned in 12 of the American states. It competes against cars like Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona, and Toyota Sienna.

Features
4.0/10

The Dodge Grand Caravan has been divided into 3 main well-defined trims in the market. The trim hierarchy hasn’t been changed a bit from the last models. Plus, the features that the last model had are also the same. These trims start at $27,530 and go up to $32,995 and are equipped with tons of convenience features.

Fuel Economy
5.5/10

The Grand Caravan may be your favorite when it comes to braking, but it’s going to make you fork out more in terms of fuel consumption. The EPA gas mileage estimates are 12 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined. Combined with a gas tank of 20 gallons, this results in 340, 500, and 400 miles respectively on city, highway, and combined cycles.

When it comes to fuel economy, Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna take the top position. This is followed by Kia Sedona and the Dodge Grand Caravan is the thirstiest car off the lot. The Kia Sedona has the highest tank capacity among all rivals while the Honda Odyssey has the lowest.

Interior
6.0/10

There’s plenty of room inside the Grand Caravan, be it in terms of the headroom or the legroom. Plus, the layout of the cabin is ergonomic and as a driver, you’ll be positioned in a manner that you get a perfect view of the outside. The front seats are comfortable, perfectly cushioned, and well contoured.

The driver’s seat has perfect adjustability, but the 2nd and 3rd rows aren’t as comfortable as you’d expect. They are designed to fold away on the floor to give space for more cargo, which is why the cushioning on these seats is thin. The ingress and egress are easy because of space, sliding middle row seats, and the sliding doors.

Dodge has surely made some space for the cargo in this model. Both the rear rows fold to give you extra 33 cubic feet of cargo space. The Odyssey, in comparison, only offers 32.8 cubic feet of maximum cargo space. The Dodge has slightly lesser room than rivals in the third row. Some of the interior features include:

  • Triple-zone manual climate control
  • Rear air conditioning
  • Backup camera
  • Tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel
  • Second-row bench seat
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Although the infotainment system of the Dodge hasn’t been upgraded in the 2020 version of the Grand Caravan, you will still have the good old system. There is a 6.5 touch panel on the center console but without any Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integrations. But you do get Chrysler’s Uconnect’s updated version.

While driving, it’s hard to toggle the tiny buttons. Plus, the layout is also not intuitive. The system comes with wifi and Bluetooth integration. But other than this, the dashboard is made of cheap plastic which doesn’t give any luxury feel. Some important features of the infotainment system are:

  • 6.5-Inch Touchscreen Display
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • AM/FM Radio
  • Sirius Satellite Radio
  • UConnect with Bluetooth Wireless Phone Connectivity
  • 6-Speaker Audio System

Exterior
5.5/10

Subtlety is the call-sign of the 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan. The outside of the car is blended with subtle styling bits and a simpler structure. However, all in all, there are not many upgrades that you’ll be seeing across the exteriors. And it would have been good if the minivan would have received some revamps this year.

The signature Dodge character can be seen in the cross at the front grille. It takes a different path by implementing a boxy design instead of curviness. There are sliding side doors on the Dodge Grand Caravan that enhance the accessibility feature of both the rear seats.

When it comes to the dimensions, the 2020 Grand Caravan comes with 201.4 inches of length and 120.5 inches of wheelbase. You get 6.7 inches of ground clearance which is the highest in class as well. Comparatively, the Sienna is smaller, and the Honda Odyssey is a lot larger. Some standout exterior features include:

  • 17-inch steel wheels
  • Fog lamps
  • Sliding doors
  • Blacked out exterior trim
  • Rear spoiler

Safety
8.4/10

The Dodge Grand Caravan doesn’t give you good safety ratings. The NHTSA gave the Grand Caravan an average overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS gave the car 4 scores of Good, and two of Poor due to the overlap at the front as well as through the driver’s side. The standard safety consignment for the Caravan isn’t that great either. You might expect some driver-assist technologies as well as active safety systems in the minivan, but there are features that are meant for transporting the passengers only. Some standard safety features are as follows:

  • Seven standard airbags
  • Integrated rear-view camera
  • Trailer sway damping
  • Cruise control
  • 2nd-row child seat anchor system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Electronic stability control

Competition
7.0/10

2020 Dodge Grand Caravan vs 2020 Toyota Sienna

The Toyota Sienna is priced at $31,000, which is a bit more than what the Grand Caravan is priced at. However, when it comes to offering a premium feel, the Sienna is much better than the Caravan. The Sienna comes equipped with a V6, 8-speed auto, FWD and AWD system, and an advanced powertrain. It simply means that Sienna has better fuel economy (19/26/21 mpg). This isn’t the case with the Grand Caravan. Even for practicality, the Sienna is much better - offering 39 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats.

2020 Dodge Grand Caravan vs 2020 Kia Sedona

In the Kia Sedona, the passengers will be able to sit more comfortably as compared to the Dodge Grand Caravan rear seats. Thanks to better legroom and headroom, every row is spacious. There’s not much difference in the headroom and legroom in the front for both the cars but things change as you go to the rear rows. All in all, both these cars are almost similar in terms of performance, interiors, and others.

2020 Dodge Grand Caravan vs 2020 Honda Odyssey

In the segment, amongst all competitors, the Honda Odyssey is perhaps the best. With a great exterior shell, comfy cabin, and perfect fuel economy, it beats every other rival fair and square. If you’re on the lookout for a minivan, then Odyssey should be your go-to destination. The Dodge could be something to consider, but not advisable especially in 2020.

Final Verdict

We would say that considering the cost of the Dodge Grand Caravan, the fold-flat second & third-row seating, you may want to consider the car. However, the V6 engine, thinly cushioned seats at the rear, and outdated design might put you off. The car is surely great to take on a vacation but it isn’t something you’d buy for your family, especially because the safety isn’t great. Being quite outdated in 2020, it certainly has to make way for better competitors.

The 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan is a robust family vehicle. It has automatic doors, GPS Navigation, Bluetooth/Satilite Radio, and in the winter it auto defrosts/heats the seats on the coldest days. The seats can be activated manually too.

Pros - ["Spacious interior", "Good on gas"]

Cons - ["Material of Seats", "MPG on the road"]

Not the best on MPG as far as city roads, but it makes up for it in other aspects. Perfect for a family who needs space for kids, luggage, and anything else for travel. Good on gas when on the highway, however. Perfect for long distance trips. Overall I would give it a 4/5
