Overview

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat Sedan is a midsize sedan offered in 6 trims, starting off at a base MSRP of $20,995. For that price, it mainly competes with the Hyundai Sonata, the Toyota Camry, and the Honda Accord. Between 6 trims, the Passat offers 4 powertrains.

The base engine is a 2.5L Inline 5 engine capable of making 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the second engine is a 170 horsepower-making 1.8L turbocharged Inline 4 engine. If more power is needed, there is also a 3.6L V6 engine that is capable of making 280 horsepower and 258 lb. ft of torque. All available powertrains are either mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission. There is also a diesel engine on offer.

The Passat reaches 60 mph from zero in 9 seconds on its base engine, which gets pumped up to 7.7 seconds with the 1.8L turbocharged Inline 4 engine; while the 3.6L V6 engine achieves 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds. Depending on the powertrain, the Passat can manage a combined fuel economy between 23 and 28 mpg. While we’re on the topic of choices, the 7 striking colors the Passat comes in really pull you towards itself.

Buying Advice

The 2014 Volkswagen Passat offers a wide configuration with enticing specs and features but if you're looking for the best of the best, we'd recommend the $34,265 SEL Premium trim level. This trim is rather expensive but it comes with a more powerful V6 engine and also offers an upgraded navigation system with a larger screen, keyless ignition/entry, remote ignition, eight-way power front seats with driver memory functions, partial leather upholstery, wood-grain interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a HD radio.

Greatest car for those who buy cars only once ever 10-15 years.

Pros - ["diesel gets fantastic fuel economy (60mpg) and range (720 mile/tank)", "Stick give firm control"]

Cons - ["interior wears faster than rest of car", "plastic bumpers"]

This is my third diesel and I am heartbroken that VW quit making them. They last forever (last one had 450K miles and this one runs like new at 150K). Can't beat the gas mileage which actually outperforms my son's hybrid. Best of all, diesel has a huge amount of torque which means this car performs like a sports car but sips fuel.

              Volkswagen Pssat

Pros - ["It gets me to where I need to be", "I like the turbo in it", "And very low maintenance"]

Cons - ["Someone else working on it", "All the dings", "And I need more room"]

Pretty good car for what it has been through. I know a few dings here and there. But we made it work. Safety overall is good. Interior is good as well, not much breaking down on that. Overall a pretty good car.
