Overview

The 2014 Toyota Corolla sedan is one of the longest-standing models of the legendary Japanese automaker. Even though it does not carry in it the potential to get people excited over a new launch or even while driving or using it every day, it is an excellent choice for somebody who wants to just buy a car and forget about it. The Toyota Corolla does not get a lot of respect due to its practical and mature side, which in our opinion, it deserves for its nature.

Buying Advice

With a lot of choice being offered at a very tight price range, the Corolla is the car that would confuse people about the specific trim level they need to buy. However, the definite highlight of the line-up is the LE Eco trim which comes with a better range, low rolling resistance tires, rear spoiler, and enhanced aerodynamics. It also gets several optional extras like premium vinyl upholstery, fog lights, alloy wheels, chrome beltline, and Eco-driving mode.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

Being a brand-new model for the 2014 model year, it comes with a 1.8L four-cylinder engine that produces two different states of tune, ranging from 132 hp to 140 hp. Like every other year in the market, the 2014 Corolla will also manage to eat up a large portion of the cake in the segment. For this year, Toyota Corolla's prices start at MSRP $16,800, and it competes against some of the very best like Nissan Sentra, Kia Forte, and the Honda Civic.

Features
9.0/10

The Toyota Corolla sedan is offered in four trim levels and comprises two different states of engine tune. It starts with the L trim level and includes the LE, LE Eco, and S trim levels. However, the base model’s features only include 15-inch steel wheels, LED running lights, power accessories, air-conditioning, six-way adjustable driver seat, 6.1-inch touchscreen, and so on. The further distribution of features across the remaining three trims can be checked in the table below.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

When it comes to fuel efficiency, Toyota manages to do a good job with the new Corolla. The new engine inside the Toyota Corolla returns 27 MPG in the city, 40 MPG on the highway, and 31 MPG combined. The fuel tank capacity is 12.4 gallons, which is a bit small even in this class with relatively very tiny fuel tanks. However, it is good enough for a range of 334 miles in the city and 496 miles on the highway, which is definitely decent.

Surprisingly, the Honda Civic is the most impressive since it delivers 29 MPG in the city, 41 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined despite also offering the best performance in the competition. It also has a bigger fuel tank, and hence, offers a class-leading range. However, one can see that the Kia Forte is the least competitive one when it comes to fuel efficiency as it offers the least mileage in the competition at 30 MPG combined.

Interior
8.0/10

The interior of the 2014 Corolla is not exactly the most enticing or exactly well-designed but is definitely good enough for the car. It has a nice design which is both ergonomic as well as good-looking. The controls are very easy to use, and the material quality is also definitely good for the segment. It has improved a lot in terms of convenience features as well for the year.

The seats are extremely supportive and very comfy, which makes for very good support during long rides. It also performs decently in terms of cargo capacity with 13 ft.³ of storage. The sedan also offers excellent features right from the base trim level, but certainly, the most exciting aspect has to be the large amount of interior space offered in the airy cabin.

Interior space of all the cars in this category is pretty much on par, but the new Corolla is definitely setting the benchmark for rear legroom. But to facilitate this, it has to sacrifice a bit in terms of cargo capacity. However, one definitely feels more at home inside the Toyota Corolla than any other car in this category. When comparing the cargo capacity, both Honda and Nissan offer the most at 15.1 cubic feet. Some standard interior features include:

  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Adjustable steering wheel column
  • Optional Heated steering wheel
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Steering Wheel Controls

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Toyota Corolla has a 6.1-inch touchscreen interface which is a bit hard to set up but extremely easy to use. It is nice and well-integrated into the dashboard. This definitely makes it one of the best systems in the segment. There is the Entune app which integrates smartphone-connected services as well as social media. We are definitely impressed by the infotainment features of this car. Some features of the infotainment system include:

  • 6.1-inch infotainment screen
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • MP3 Player
  • Wireless Cell Phone Hookup
  • USB port
  • Bluetooth

Exterior
6.0/10

In terms of looks, the Corolla was never the one to attract many buyers. However, it has generally been well-liked among all kinds of circles due to its practical and reliable nature. For 2014, the car does manage to look fairly modern and neat overall. It has LED headlights right from the base trim and looks a bit premium because of that. The design is not dramatic but is very clean. The sedan weighs 2,800 lbs and stands 5.3 inches above the ground.

Being one of the most competitive segments, one can see that the competition boils down even for the dimensions where the cars are almost exactly at par. Both in terms of weight as well as size, all these cars are exactly on par. With the wheelbase of the Corolla being extended for the current generation, they all have the exact same wheelbase as well at 106.3 inches. The Corolla offers 5.3 inches of ground clearance which is a bit on the low side but definitely not anything to complain about. Some standout exterior features include:

  • LED low-beam headlights
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Color-keyed outside door handles and mirrors
  • Alloy wheels
  • Fog Lamps (optional)
  • Sunroof/moonroof (optional)

Safety
9.0/10

The 2014 Toyota Corolla sedan has good ratings by the IIHS which is a testament to how safe the car is. It has also earned an overall five-star safety rating from NHTSA, which is the highest honor conferred by the governmental organization responsible for crash testing. Apart from the structural safety, the sedan also offers few standard safety features like lots of airbags, rear-view camera, whiplash protection, and so on. Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Rear-view camera
  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Safety Locks
  • Traction Control

Final Verdict

The 2014 Toyota Corollasedan is a long-standing model from the brand and has represented practicality and frugality in every single generation. It has retained the exact DNA from the past and continues to impress with the things it is expected to do. It is also an extremely reliable car and one that is extremely cheap to repair even if things go wrong. All in all, it is not a car you will ever regret buying and hence makes for a good buy.

Pros - ["It has towing power", "Great on gas"]

Cons - ["Small screen", "Tire sensor light is always on"]

Great car, good on gas and it can tow up to 750 lbs. The car can go 3 miles on empty and has a 259 mile range when full. Good sound from the radio. The screen is small and the radio did go out but you have to pull the fuse and put it back in, in order to restart it again.

Toyota Corolla is one of the high ranking cars

Pros - ["Good mileage", "Toyota is a good brand of car"]

Cons - ["The radio screen screen stopped responding to the touch.", "The back up camera doesn't make warning noises."]

I fell in love with my car as soon as I saw it. I knew it was going to be mine before I even test drove it. Everything was perfect except for after a few years, the touch screen stopped working. To replace, is speedy. The back up camera works great, but I wish it had a warning sound along with it. Overall, Toyota is one of the leading brands of cars and I love mine.

Safe pick for a reliable car

Pros - ["* I love that it's easy on gas", "* I love that the technology is still compatible with 2024s technology"]

Cons - ["Sometimes it shows a tire pressure icon when there's no issue", "Sometimes it stalls . Rarely though"]

Owning a Toyota Corolla has been awesome. It's great for everyday driving, and I love the fuel efficiency 30-32 MPG in the city and 40-42 MPG on the highway. The interior is comfy and has plenty of space, and the infotainment system is really easy to use. The safety features, like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, make me feel safe. Overall, it's super reliable, low-mainten...
