Overview

The 2020 Toyota C-HR is Toyota’s smallest SUV and comes with updated styling. Equipped with an underpowered four-cylinder engine producing 144 hp, it offers a good fuel economy of 29 MPG in combined driving conditions. It is available in FWD configuration only. It lacks adequate passenger space and cargo capacity but offers some good interior features to lure prospective buyers.

The 2020 Toyota C-HR is available in three trims: LE, XLE and Limited. The price for the LE trim starts at $21,295 and goes up to $26,350 for the top of the line Limited trim. The 2020 Toyota C-HR offers an adequate list of standard features but falls short when compared to rivals. It faces competition from the likes of Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V

Buying Advice

We would recommend the XLE trim as it adds many useful features over the base trim. It offers leather wrapped steering wheel, passive entry,18-inch alloy wheels, blindspot monitoring along with rear cross traffic alert, etc. It also offers other options like Audio plus with HD Radio and R-Code paint treatment that includes color-keyed body elements along with black or silver roof and outside mirrors for a contrasting color effect.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

“ Styling takes priority in the compact Toyota C-HR.”- The Car Connection

The 2020 Toyota C-HR is known for its distinctive styling and frugality. The C-HR lacks practicality due to inadequate rear row legroom and cargo capacity. The 144 hp from the engine might be underwhelming for some but it’s quite efficient. The 2020 CH-R gets features like LED headlights with daytime running lights, 8-inch infotainment touchscreen display, heated and powered outside mirrors, etc as standard. The C-HR also offers Toyota Safety Sense P for ensuring better safety.

The 2020 Toyota CH-R is reliable and easy to maintain. Toyota offers ToyotaCare, a complimentary scheduled maintenance service for 2yrs/25,000 miles. The yearly maintenance and fuel cost comes to about $2,183, considering a 5-year ownership and 15,000 miles/year run. It will cost about $0.14/mile to own this vehicle or in other words it will cover 6.86 miles for each dollar spent. It offers 3yr/36,000 miles basic warranty and 5yr/60,000 miles powertrain warranty which is quite good as per its price point and segment.

The XLE trim comes with an MSRP of $23,330 and adds some more exterior design elements and convenience options. The Limited trim is more tech-advanced and pampering than the other two trims, costing $26,350.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine on the 2020 Toyota C-HR offers good gas mileage. It offers about 27 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway and 29 MPG in mixed driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 13.2 gallons, the C-HR can offer up to 382 miles of range in combined driving conditions.

The Mazda CX-3 is the most fuel efficient but comes with a small fuel tank. It loses out in the range battle. The Honda HR-V and Hyundai Kona offer the same combined MPG figures and range as well. The Toyota C-HR comes second with respect to the range offered in the comparison.

Interior
4.0/10

There's seating for five people in the C-HR. The front seats have a good amount of space and comfort, but it's a different story in the back. Due to a sloping roofline and tiny rear windows, most rear passengers will feel cramped in the C-HR.-Cars.usnews

The 2020 Toyota C-HR can accommodate up to five passengers. The interior is quite youthful and the design is ergonomic. The dashboard is covered in synthetic leather with simulated stitching. The air conditioning vents are asymmetrical, and the entire cabin is angled towards the driver. The front seats provide good comfort and cushioning as well. The seats are trimmed in fabric or leather upholstery. Only the Limited trim gets leather trimmed seats and power adjustability for the driver seat as standard.

The three-spoke steering wheel gets mounted controls for added convenience. The second row seating is good but feels cramped for a compact SUV. It is better suitable for three kids or two adults. The C-HR offers a cargo capacity of 19.0 cu-ft, quite less as compared to some of its rivals. The rear 60/40 split seats can be folded and trunk space can be extended to 36.4 cu-ft. Also, the dual-zone climate control system helps in maintaining ambient conditions inside the cabin.

All the compact SUVs offer a seating capacity of up to five passengers. The Toyota C-HR comes with the most cramped rear row. The Mazda CX-3 offers the best legroom in the second row while providing the least cargo capacity. The Honda HR-V is a more balanced option with respect to sufficient rear seat legroom and higher cargo capacity as well. The Hyundai Kona offers better rear row legroom and marginally better trunk space as compared to the C-HR.

The 2020 Toyota CHR comes standard with a 4.2-inches TFT Multi-Information Display with customizable settings. A 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard across all the trims. The touchscreen sits above the dashboard and is responsive. All the trims get access to features like bluetooth connectivity for music streaming and calling, SiriusXM satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay. Overall the system is intuitive and easy to use. Some of the standout interior features are:

Exterior
7.0/10

Stylish? Maybe. Cringeworthy? Some might say that. Either way, it caught your eye, because the C-HR’s exterior is nothing short of attention-grabbing.-Car and Driver

The exterior styling of the 2020 Toyota C-HR is definitely one of its USPs. The design language of the car can be termed as “Aggressive” in simple terms. The front fascia imbibes two sleek and wrap-around multi-reflector LED headlamps with daytime running lamps. The front grille is virtually non-existent and there is a mesh design in the front bumper for cooling

The side profile is reminiscent of both hatchback and coupe body styles. The black side skirts lend it an rugged appeal and the 17/18-inch alloy wheels are designed to stand out from the crowd. The rear profile is nothing short of aggressive as well. The rear tail lights are sharp and the liftgate opens vertically for access to the trunk space. The roof mounted spoiler looks sporty.

The 2020 Toyota C-HR weighs about 3,300 pounds and is heavier than its counterparts. It is also longer and sits on a longer wheelbase. A longer wheelbase helps with better stability. Most of the other exterior dimensions are similar to the competition. The Mazda CX-3 is the lightest and sits on a shorter wheelbase for better handling. The Kona offers the maximum ground clearance while the HR-V offers the least.  Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • LED headlights
  • LED Projector headlamps with adaptive lighting system (Limited)
  • Chrome window trim (Limited)
  • Fog lights (Limited)
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Roof mounted spoiler

Safety
6.0/10

“The 2020 Toyota C-HR has done well in crash tests and lacks for little in terms of collision-avoidance tech.”- The Car Connection

The 2020 Toyota C-HR has received an overall five star safety rating in various crash tests performed by the NHTSA. The IIHS has also tagged it as “Good” in most of the tests but it scored less in headlamps department, missing out on the Top Safety Pick award as its previous model.

All the trims of the 2020 C-HR are equipped with an advanced suite of safety features like the Toyota Safety Sense P and many other passive safety features to ensure passenger safety. Some of the standout safety features are:

  • Automated emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Blindspot monitor
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Automatic high beams
  • Steering assist

Competition
9.0/10

2020 Toyota C-HR vs 2020 Hyundai Kona

The 2020 Hyundai Kona comes with a more easy on the eye design. It also offers better performance, interior space and cargo capacity than the Toyota CH-R. It is marginally more fuel efficient as well.

The CH-R offers radical styling and offers many interior features as standard. Plus, its standard list of safety features is commendable at its price point. However, we would go with the Hyundai Kona

2020 Toyota C-HR vs 2020 Mazda CX-3

The 2020 Mazda CX-3 is a perfect blend of styling and performance. It offers better fuel efficiency and better powertrain as compared to the Toyota CH-R. However, it lacks in the cargo capacity department.

The Toyota CH-R leads with a longer list of standard interior and safety features. The CX-3 offers better ground clearance. Both compact SUVs fall in the similar price bracket and we would pick the Mazda CX-3

2020 Toyota C-HR vs 2020 Honda HR-V

The 2020 Honda HR-V would be the best-balanced compact SUV in the segment. It offers very good cargo capacity and can haul the passengers in better comfort. The CH-R offers very good interior features and youthful design.

It offers better ground clearance than the Honda HR-V and handles better. The Honda HR-V is more fuel efficient and would be our pick over the Toyota CH-R for being 'jack of all trades and master of none'.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

If you can live with the looks, the 2020 Toyota C-HR is quite a decent vehicle for everyday use. You also get decent aftersales support from Toyota while lower depreciation is an added asset. The 2020 CH-R offers great equipment, and the price point is resonable too. It is quite a good value in itself, but when you look at the competition, the appeal drops a lot. However, it's worth buying if performance and interior space aren't on your to-get list.
