Overview

The Nissan GT-R is one of the performance beasts that remains hard to beat even after being in production for so many years. With every year’s update, it gets some tweaks in its already sporty characters which makes it even more desirable among the fanboys all around the globe. The GT-R is known as Godzilla for a reason and it is powered by a mighty 3.8L Turbo V6 engine. The acceleration will push you back in the seats no matter at what speed you are driving the GT-R.

Buying Advice

We recommend going for the Premium trim as all the trim gets the same powertrain options and the driving dynamics also remain the same across all the trims. The Premium gets all the features that you will need for your daily drives. It comes out as the best value for money. If you want a two-seater variant then only it makes sense to go for the Track Edition. The reduced weight and sportier suspension will make the driving experience better for sure.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2014 Nissan GT-R is offered in three trim options and starts at an MSRP of $99,590. The GT-R not only impresses with its acceleration figures but is also one of the capable options on the track because of its handling capabilities. The GT-R competes with the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Jaguar XKR, and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Features
9.0/10

The 2014 Nissan GT-R is offered in three trim options namely Premium, Black Edition, and Track Edition. The Track Edition is a new entrant in the GT-R’s line up and as the name suggests, it is more focused on track uses. The GT-R is offered in 2+2 coupe variants except for the Track Edition which comes in a two-seater configuration only. The features are well distributed across the trims and the base Premium trim starts at an MSRP of $99,590 while it goes to $115,710 for top-of-the-line Track Edition.

Engine and Performance
9.9/10

The Nissan GT-R has always been a beast when it comes to performance and the 2014 model year is no different. The GT-R is powered by a mighty 3.8L Turbo V6 engine that churns out 545 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and the power is sent to all four wheels. The 2014 GT-R gets a new fuel injector to improve the throttle response in the mid-range and top-end of the rave range.

The GT-R has always been a beast in terms of acceleration and the added performance in the top-end means it can pull even better across the rave range. It takes an impressive 3.2 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph and the quarter-mile run takes just 11.6 seconds. You always have enough power on reserve whenever you push your foot on the gas paddle and it launches like a bullet off the line.

The 2014 Nissan GT-R remains unbeatable in terms of outright acceleration sharing the spot with Porsche 911 Turbo. The Porsche however, gets a slight advantage in the quarter-mile run with a difference of 0.3 seconds. The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 takes 4.1 seconds to reach 0 to 60 mph while the Jaguar XKR takes one complete second more than the GT-R to reach 0 to 60 mph. The Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 Turbo also has a similar top speed at 197 miles per hour.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2014 Nissan GT-R is not the best choice if you want impressive fuel economy figures. The performance that Godzilla offers is going to hit the economy for sure. It manages to deliver 16 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg of combined fuel economy. The fuel tank however is of a decent size at 19.5-gallon and manages to deliver a good range for long highway drives. The 2014 GT-R offers a range of 312/448.5/370.5 in city/highway/combined driving conditions, respectively.

The Porsche 911 Turbo is the most fuel-efficient car in the competition here, which also doesn’t offer very economical fuel efficiency figures. The Porsche returns 17 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg of combined fuel economy which is 1 mpg more than the GT-R in every aspect. The Jaguar repeats the same story by returning 1 mpg less than the GT-R in all driving conditions. The Chevy Camaro delivers the least fuel efficiency in the competition.

Interior
8.0/10

The first row of the 2014 Nissan GT-R offers a very spacious cabin for the driver and the co-driver. The front row feels ambient and the headroom, shoulder room, and legroom are very generous for the segment. The controls for the drivers are also very easy to use and the driver can reach all the controls easily from the seat. The features like Heated front seats, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel, carbon and leather trims on the dashboard makes the cabin a nice place to be in. It also gets dual-zone automatic climate control for the driver and front passenger.

The rear seat feels cramped and is not spacious enough to fit adults in there. The rear seats remain the best option only for young kids or you can use it to keep your small luggage as the cargo area is also very limited at just 8.8 cubic feet only. The materials used inside the cabin are livable and do not feel cheap at all.

The Jaguar XKR offers the best-in-class 11.7 cubic feet of the cargo area and the Chevy Camaro is also not far behind at 11.3 cubic feet. Standout interior features include:

How intuitive is the 2014 Nissan GT-R’s infotainment unit?

The 2014 Nissan GT-R comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system standard across the trims. The performance screen offered with the 2014 GT-R can be customized to display the engine information that you want it to display. The infotainment screen supports DVD Player, USB connectivity, Aux input, Satellite Radio, and AM/FM Stereo. The screen is very easy to use and responds to the touch input very intuitively. It also features an 11-speaker Bose Premium surround sound stereo system for a better music experience. Standout infotainment features include:

  • 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • DVD Player
  • Voice recognition
  • Navigation system
  • Satellite Radio
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • 11-speaker Bose Premium surround sound stereo system

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2014 Nissan GT-R is not a conventional-looking coupe like the competition. It is more muscular in its overall styling and has a solid road presence. The design is very subjective and completely depends on your choice, but people are going to turn their heads to have a glance out on the road for sure. The bigger 20-inch wheels match the muscular look of the car very well. The front bonnet looks very athletic with sharp lines on it.

On both sides of the front bonnet, it houses very sleek-looking headlights. Below that you can find the LED DRLs that complement the overall front stance. The story remains pretty much the same on the sides also. The 20-inch alloy wheels and the sloping roofline with some sharp creases around the doors make it look like a muscular coupe. The rear gets twin exhausts on both sides and classic round taillights with the rear wings give it a very classic and sporty look.

The Chevrolet Camaro is the longest car in the competition and also has the longest wheelbase in the competition. The Jaguar XKR is the second-longest but the GT-R has a longer wheelbase on offer which translates into more interior space. The Porsche 911 Turbo remains the shortest car in every dimension and also has the shortest wheelbase on offer. Standout exterior features:

  • 20” alloy wheels
  • LED DRLs
  • LED Taillights
  • Quad exhaust pipes
  • Brembo premium brakes
  • Carbon-fiber rear wing

Safety
7.0/10

The 2014 Nissan GT-R has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Administration Safety or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The car is well built from high-strength materials and there is no complaint in terms of the safety from the chassis of the GT-R. The Nissan GT-R comes with various safety techs as a standard for the segment. You get safety features like multiple airbags, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Front Seatbelt Pretensioners, Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System, and Stability Control. The safety features include:

  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution
  • Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • Xenon High-Intensity Discharge Headlamp
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Emergency Braking Assist

Final Verdict

There is no need for any formal recommendation to buy the Godzilla as it has dominated the segment for years now. The 2014 Nissan GT-R offers performance that is hard to match and the handling is impeccable for the segment. The reliability of the car has also been proven over the years. If you are in the market for anything similar, then the Nissan GT-R is a very easy to recommend car without any double thoughts.
