Overview

Ford Taurus is the last large sedan by Ford in the US, and sadly, it's in its last production run. The US-based auto giant has decided to take a new direction and is shaping itself into a mobility company. The first step was to announce the cancellation of a majority of their current passenger car lineup. Taurus, Focus, and Fiesta, all are in their last generations. Dealerships are offering great discounts too, and if you want a good deal made better, then Ford is something to look at.

First produced in 1985, Ford Taurus was one of the biggest milestones by the automotive giant on the American shores. Now in its sixth generation, the Taurus feels somewhat, well, neglected. The interiors and exteriors have been the same since 2013, with only changes occurring to the engine. For 2020, there have been absolutely no changes to the car over the previous models Ford Taurus. Thankfully, it still looks handsome, and space inside, although not class-leading, is quite generous

Buying Advice

Theoretically, there is a Taurus for every pocket. The Limited trim is a great choice as it improvest the most on the base SE without having to cost a small fortune. If you want an American alternative to the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, this is it.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Ford Taurus is not a car you may see winning many awards. In terms of performance, the car doesn't feel that sporty even in the Sport mode. The 6-speed automatic transmission is just about average and less than 300 horsepower from a 3.5L V6 is not that impressive either. There have not been any major upgrades from the previous years, which has allowed rivals like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord to catch up. Additionally, the Taurus is not as stylish as a Dodge Charger or as loaded as a Kia Optima. With several large-sized sedans at its toes, the Ford Taurus will have a hard time going out on a high note.

Features
4.0/10

The 2019 Ford Taurus has 4 trim options. The engine in the SE, SEL, and Limited is a free-breathing 3.6-liter V6 with a 288 hp and 254 ft-lbs power and torque output. The SHO gets the same engine, but with breathing apparatus attached to it, and makes 365 horsepower. Both these engines use a six-speed automatic transmission and either a Front-wheel drive or an All-Wheel-drive setup.

Fuel Economy
4.0/10

The 3.5-liter engine is undercut in the economy department by the current crop of turbo inline-4s, especially the Japanese ones. Those engines claim a figure so high, the depleting oil reserves might actually last for quite some time. The Taurus isn’t very frugal but manages to hold just fine. It sips a single gallon for 16 miles in the city, while on the highway it sips one for every 26 miles.

"It [Ford Taurus] hasn’t been redesigned in nearly a decade, and that shows. Its interior feels and looks older than what you'll find with rivals." -Cars, US News

Seating and Comfort

The interiors in the 2019 Ford Taurus aren’t from 2019, but rather from the early 2010s. The design is extremely outdated. There is a good side to this however, a practical one. The interiors are quite spacious in the front and have a very neat look. An instrument cluster is a simple unit, with an extremely easy-to-read analog speedometer in the middle. There are color displays on both sides of the speedo, which show a plethora of information, including a tachometer, average fuel economy indicator, etc.

The front seats are extremely comfy and roomy, although the rear seats aren’t as spacious. If you have children, they’ll love the rear seats. This doesn’t mean that the rear is cramped, it just means that children are the target audience for the rear seats. Considering that the Taurus is a HUGE car, this is a little disappointing. The seats are really plush and comfy though, and the primary duty of ferrying people is handled well in this car.

Infotainment

Ford Taurus uses Ford’s signature Sync infotainment system, which is a very responsive unit and features a 4.2-inch color LCD screen in the center stack. Other standard infotainment features are as follows:

  • AM/FM Stereo/Single-CD/MP3 Capable
  • Radio w/Seek-Scan, Clock, Speed Compensated Volume Control, Aux Audio Input Jack, Steering Wheel Controls and Radio Data System
  • Window Grid Antenna
  • 6-speaker Audio system
  • SYNC Communications & Entertainment System
  • Enhanced voice recognition
  • Smart-charging USB port and auxiliary input jack
  • 2 LCD Monitors in the driver console

Cargo Capacity

You have a lot of cargo capacity in the Ford Taurus, including two sets of cup holders and a bin in the center console. The highlight of the car, however, is its trunk. Ford uses its large dimensions to expand the trunk space. The cargo capacity in the Taurus is not only great, but it’s also the best in the segment. The 60/40 split-folding rear seats help fit longer items too, like a surfboard. You can easily stow a full-size human inside, but you shouldn’t, because it's rude.

"This generation Ford Taurus, which the 2019 model represents, dates back a decade. It hasn't received many updates either, other than a face-lift in 2013 and the adoption of the Sync 3 infotainment interface in 2016" .-Edmunds

Dimension and Weight

The dimensions of the Ford Taurus are huge, as stated earlier. On the outside, you can understand why the Taurus was a preferred cop car for many law enforcement officers. Its dimensions are intimidating, even when standing still. It's over 200 inches in length and even the width and height are a lot. It is easily the largest car in the segment, hence the bulk.

Muscling this car- yes, you have to muscle it, requires a lot of effort around town. The large dimensions aren’t suited to tight parking spots, or weaving to and fro in traffic.

Design and Styling

The Taurus hasn’t had a major design update in this entire decade. There was a minor one in 2013, which made the front and rear a bit more modern. This is in contrast to the German cars, which receive massive redesigns every few years. Ford followed the don’t-fix-what-isn’t-broken policy with the Taurus’s styling, and this is one of the few cars for which this works.

Safety
4.0/10

While the Ford Taurus is decidedly average, it does intend to keep its occupants safe in the event of a crash. Both the NHTSA and IIHS have given the 2019 Ford Taurus sedan respectable scores in terms of safety. The only area where there is a compromise in the chassis is the driver-side lower body. It was found that a collision in a Taurus would mean quite a lot of damage to the leg of the driver.

In terms of crash-prevention, the Taurus does next to nothing to intervene in case of an imminent collision. The halogen headlights struggle to provide a good view in murky conditions. Most of the systems assist with improving the control of the car at high speeds. You will not any advanced driver aids that are becoming something of a norm in most sedans today.

Competition

Ford Taurus vs Honda Accord

Honda Accord is the car that puts all other cars to shame. It is the segment leader in terms of price tag, space, practicality, drivability and fuel economy. Surprisingly it is smaller in exterior dimensions, but has more interior space than the Taurus! Taurus offers more road presence though, and dealerships are giving superb discounts on this car, and you can pick a 2019 Taurus for Accord money. There is another, better thing you can pick for Accord money though; a Honda Accord.

Ford Taurus vs Toyota Camry

Toyota does what Japanese manufacturers do best, build a cost-effective car that is designed to lead the segment. It may not be as popular as the Accord, but it is neck to neck with the Honda sedan. You can probably guess how it stacks against the Taurus.

Ford Taurus vs Chevrolet Impala

Ford vs Chevy, the age-old rivalry! Chevy offers more balanced engine options with its large sedan, one 2.5 inline, and the other a 3.6 V6. The smaller engine is less powerful, but quite efficient. The larger engine is quite a bit more powerful, at 305 horsepower. Ford has the Taurus SHO to answer for the latter, and has a much more powerful V6. It is also extremely pricey though, a little too much to be compared to the cars here.

Final Verdict
5.3/10

Ford Taurus is a good car, but not the best, not by a long shot. There is a reason Ford is discontinuing production of this car soon. There hasn’t been a proper upgrade to the car for over a decade. If you like the looks of the car, or if you bag a pretty sweet deal, or if you have a soft side for the brand, then by all means, go for it.
