Overview

The Chevrolet Trax is the right choice for buyers who want to go unnoticed on roads since the SUV doesn’t have an appeal at all. The subcompact crossover is a class for those who wish to have fun and zippy car with a good list of standard equipment. It has been the rage these days and the Chevrolet Trax has been one of the peppiest ones out there!

Buying Advice

The LS trim is well-equipped for a base trim but we recommend buying the LT trim as it unlocks a few more features for just a couple of grand more. Buying the LT trim would also unlock the 4 additional packages which you can opt for based on your requirement.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The Trax barely makes it thanks to its list of standard features which it offers. The car sees no major changes in 2019 and is a carryover from the previous year. It is available in 3 trims; LS, LT, and Premier with a base price of $21,300. At that price point, the Trax goes against some of the more famous crossovers like the Honda HR-V, the Toyota C-HR, and the Mazda CX-3

Features
4.0/10

You can buy the 2019 Chevrolet Trax at three levels. Those trims are; LS, LT, and Premier. The LS is the base trim and has a starting price of $21,300. The LS trim comes with plenty of features and doesn’t disappoint being the base trim. It comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display, 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, power mirrors, rearview camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, cloth upholstered seats, and a 6-speaker audio system. Not bad for an entry-level car.

Spending a little more will get you the LT trim. It adds features like LED DRLs, heated mirrors, roof rails, upgraded cloth upholstery, remote vehicle start, and an additional storage compartment. This will cost you $23,200. 4 major packages can be loaded onto the LT trim. Convenience Package, Driver Confidence Package, Sun and Sound Package, and the Redline Edition.

The top-tier trim Premier comes with all the above packages excluding the Redline package. A fully loaded Trax might get a bit expensive. The Premier trim provides 18-inch wheels, fog lights, full faux leather upholstered seats with front seats having heated functionality, and an auto-dimming mirror. It also adds some safety features like forward collision alert and lane departure warning system. The base price for the Premier trim is $27,600 and a fully loaded one will cost you just under $30,000.

All the trims in the Trax are decently equipped but for some, the base trim is a little too sparse in terms of convenience features and value. That being said, Chevrolet does have some options and packages on offer to make up for the lack of features but these options add to the MSRP quite fast and make the higher trim worthwhile.

Which trim should you buy?

The LS trim is well-equipped for a base trim but we recommend buying the LT trim as it unlocks a few more features for just a couple of grand more. Buying the LT trim would also unlock the 4 additional packages which you can opt for based on your requirement.

Engine and Performance
4.0/10

Having a turbocharger doesn’t necessarily mean that a car is fast. A clear example is the 2019 Chevrolet Trax. The acceleration is sluggish and the engine provides a low-end punch in needful situations. Under the hood is a 1.4L turbocharged Inline-4 engine that produces 138 hp @ 4,900 RPM and has a peak torque of 148 lb-ft @ 1,850 RPM. This might be the smallest engine for a car in this class but it still produces numbers good enough to compete with the likes of the 2019 Toyota CH-R and 2019 Mazda CX-3, both offering a 2.0L Inline-4 engine as their standard engine.

This 1.4L engine is hooked up to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This transmission has a dual personality of its own. Sometimes it is smooth and shifts gear with accuracy but other times it seems to be too eager to downshift and performs sluggishly. All the trims of the 2019 Chevrolet Trax have two drivetrain options which are FWD and AWD. The former FWD is the standard drivetrain fitted in all trims. The AWD offers slightly better performance but it takes a hit in fuel economy.

The CX-3’s 2.0L Inline-4 engine with the 6-speed SKYACTIV automatic transmission is truly a great combination. It produces the best performance figures among the 4 cars and it is the fastest to 60 MPH as well, taking only 8.4 seconds. The Honda HR-V, however, has the most impressive top speed which is about 133 MPH.

How well does the 2019 Chevrolet Trax handle?

The Chevrolet Trax negotiates with the undulations and irregularities in the city pretty well, without making the occupants feel the irregularities at all. The suspension is very well-balanced between a firm and soft to make driving easy, while not bouncing the car much. In terms of maneuverability inside the city, the Trax does a pretty good job owing to the high driving position, big windshield, and small turning circle. The steering is light and turning from lock to lock isn’t an issue at all.

On the highway, the engine does feel rather strained due to the small capacity but it does manage to maintain its pace rather well. The gearbox’s shifting is decent and the overall drive is well maintained by the suspension setup. All this, but the cabin does feel a bit too loud due to the ambient noises creeping in, especially the road noise, which takes away some of the fun in the process.

2019 Chevrolet Trax Braking Performance

This might be the strongest suit for the 2019 Chevrolet Trax. It has the amazing braking ability and is actually better than most of its rivals. The front brake rotor has 11.8-inches rotors while the rear has 9.0-inch rotors and when compared to its rivals, the others are equipped with bigger rear rotors. That being said, the size of the rear rotor doesn’t affect Trax’s performance. The brake pedal is firm and its response is confidence-building.

Despite the smaller rotors, the Trax is also aided by a lower curb weight which results in a braking distance of just 164 feet - which is the least when compared to the other cars. The CH-R stops in 174 feet, and the HR-V does the deed 2 feet later. The Mazda has a similar curb weight to the Trax but the brakes don’t feel as responsive, resulting in a poor braking distance - which is the longest in the competition.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The powertrain combination on the 2019 Chevy Trax provides a mediocre fuel economy which stands at 24 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highways, giving it a combined fuel economy of 26 MPG from its 14.0-gallon fuel tank. This economy, when compared to the others, does remain lower despite the rivals boasting of bigger engines underneath.

The 2019 Chevrolet Trax is fitted with the biggest fuel tank. It can hold up to 14.0 gallons of fuel giving it a good overall range. The car with the smallest tank is the Mazda but its strong economy numbers don’t affect the range, instead, it ends up being the best number yet again.

Interior
4.0/10

Having a total length of just 167.2 inches the small size exterior translates into a relatively roomier interior for the 2019 Chevrolet Trax. However, the rear seats feel a little cramped for our liking. The looks of it are very straightforward and kind of bland. The cloth upholstery used in the Base trim LS feels cheap and the soft and hard plastic used on the door panels and dashboard also has no good feel to it. The updated cloth upholstery of the LT trim feels much nicer but the full faux leather-trimmed upholstery in the Premier trim is the best option.

The buttons and knobs used to manipulate the climate controls are not durable as such. Cheap plastic thrown around everywhere around the inside of the car gives a depressing feeling. The Premier trim however is an exception to this horror. It has a much nicer interior with heated front seats, a sunroof, and leather accents. The front seats have a firm position to them. Both the driver and passenger seats are 4-way manually adjustable but you have an option for 6-way power-adjustable seats.

Although the interior is actually roomier than you’d expect, the 2019 Chevrolet Trax’s rivals like the Honda HR-V and the Mazda CX-3 offer a lot more space for a comparatively less price. That being said, the Trax surely has some pros in the cabin, of which the most highlighting are:

  • 4-way manually adjustable driver and passenger seats
  • Theft-deterrent system
  • Cloth upholstered seats
  • 60/40 split-bench folding rear seats
  • Sunroof (Premier trim)
  • Single-zone manual climate control

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment system in the 2019 Chevrolet Trax is its savior. It is a 7.0-inch touchscreen display that has good clarity and resolution with an easy-to-use interface but the system lags a bit and delays the response. It has features like AM/FM Radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, 4G LTE and Wi-Fi Hotspot compatibility, voice pass-through technology, etc. This system is connected to a 6-speaker audio system which is of acceptable sound quality.

The buttons and knobs which can be used to manipulate the system, however, fail to impress. Overall, this is a well-equipped setup and one of the strong points of the Trax. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 4G LTE and Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Bluetooth with voice pass-through technology
  • AM/FM Radio

Exterior
4.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Trax is definitely not a looker. It is most preferred for buyers who aren’t looking for extravagant styling. Its not-so-exciting front fascia has Automatic non-xenon headlights for the LS trim which are upgraded to LED DRLs if you opt for the LT trim. Its two-tier grille with the chevy bow-tie in the middle with fog light housing and chrome accents, complete the front look.

Coming to the side, it is equipped with 16-inch steel wheels with a hubcap which is not so exciting either. Opting for the Premier trim will fetch you 18-inch alloy wheels. Contours over the black-colored fenders add a bit of character to this subcompact crossover. LT and Premier trims are equipped with roof rails as well. The rear end of the car has an unusual look and shape to it. A rear lip spoiler is above the window panel along with LED brake lights and a single exhaust outlet.

The Trax stands the tallest with 6.2-inch ground clearance. However, it has the shortest wheelbase aiding in driving around the city, while not affecting the interior dimensions. On the contrary, the C-HR is the biggest proportionally and does have a commanding feel to it. That being said, some of the styling elements on the Trax are:

  • LED daytime running headlights
  • Fog lights
  • Power adjustable, manual-folding mirrors
  • Intermittent wipers
  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • LED tail lamps

Safety
5.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Trax has limited safety features which are available as standard. Most of them have to be added which is a bummer because most of its rivals offer safety features such as forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking as standard. It still did well in the crash test analysis of the NHTSA. It earned a full-five stars rating from them.

The IIHS also found the Trax a well-equipped car hence awarding the 2019 Chevrolet Trax an overall score of “Good”. Most of the features that are mentioned in the list below as “available” in the list below are standard on the Premier trim and optional on the LT trim. LS trim however misses out on most of them. Some of the standout safety features to claim the ratings are as follows:

  • 10 airbags
  • Rearview camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Forward collision warning (available)
  • Automatic emergency braking (available)
  • Rear parking sensors (available)
  • Blind-spot monitoring system (available)
  • Lane departure warning with lane keep assist (available)

Competition
6.0/10

2019 Chevrolet Trax vs 2019 Honda HR-V

Many buyers would lean more towards Honda because of its practicality. Most of the aspects like engine performance, interior quality, and space, cargo space, fuel economy go towards the Honda and is the clear winner. However, the abundant features offered by the Trax outperform the HR-V. Even the handling of the 2019 Chevrolet is much better than the Honda.

2019 Chevrolet Trax vs 2019 Toyota C-HR

Another Japanese product, the Toyota C-HR hits the sweet spot with its enhanced powertrain but other than that the Trax is a much better option. The interior features offered by the Trax are better and as discussed earlier, it also has one of the best handlings in the class.

2019 Chevrolet Trax vs 2019 Mazda CX-3

The 2019 Mazda CX-3 is the best overall package that a car can offer in the sub-compact crossover class. The 2019 Chevrolet Trax falls short on many occasions if not all. The Mazda has a superior powertrain, better driving dynamics, better fuel economy, better interior space, etc. The only aspect where both the cars fall short is cargo space with the Trax having slightly better space than the CX-3.

Final Verdict
5.0/10

The few positives on the new Chevrolet Trax like exceptional handling, an abundance of features, good safety scores from the federal authorities, etc. don’t compensate for the multiple negatives on this car. The lack of an exciting powertrain, cheap quality interior materials, subpar fuel economy is some of the major categories which a car should deliver well.

The Chevy Trax was a great buy for me. It is AWD and very economical.

Pros - ["It is just the right size for me.", "It sits high enough that I can get through the snow."]

Cons - ["That there is no compartment between the seats.", "That it does not have navigation."]

The Chevy Trax delivers up to 28 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. This vehical delivers a very comfortable ride, in any season. I just love the sporty look and the spacious interior. I would recommend the Chevy Trax to anyone who is looking for a dependable, smaller SUV!
