Overview

After the Acura TLX received a complete overhaul for the 2021 model year, the all-new 2022 TLX will arrive without any major changes. The new generation TLX improved almost every aspect of the sedan by offering a 272 hp 2L turbocharged I-4 engine along with FWD and AWD options across all 4 trim levels. Since there are no major changes, the MSRP is pegged to start from $37,700 for sale. The 2022 TLX puts an emphasis on sportiness, with its athletic stance and expressive interior design.

All set for release in the fall of 2021, the 2022 Acura TLX also has a more powerful sibling, the Type S that comes with a 355 hp 3L V6 for a hefty price tag of $48,000. Both are packed with a spacious and sumptuous interior that is loaded with tech from top to bottom. The TLX brings immense value for money and its interior boasts Acura's excellent build quality, luxurious features such as head-up display, active sound control, and more. In its present do, it faces stiff rivalry from established names like Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and its own cousin, the Honda Accord.

Buying Advice

From the available trim levels of the 2022 Acura TLX, we would suggest you go with the Technology package that is an ultimate value for money deal. The Technology package seems to be a smart choice compared to the other two packages.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 2022 Acura TLX is a carryover of the predecessor with minor feature updates as it was full-redesigned just the last year. With the 4 trim levels, the TLX prices start from around $37,700 for the base, $43,000 for the Technology Package, $46,000 for the A-Spec Package, and $48,000 for the top-of-the-line Advance Package. AWD. The Acura TLX Type S begins at $52,800 (reviewed separately).

The 2022 TLX's interior continues to be spacious, comfortable, and feature-packed while the power comes to the wheels via the 272 hp 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine. While it is a quintessential Japanese proposition, being a luxury offering, expect the 5-year ownership costs to sit around the ballpark of $45,426 for the 2022 TLX Technology Package. If you don't want a long-term commitment, there are lease deals starting from $369/month for 36 months after a downpayment of $3,899 at the time of signing.

Even with its price bump, the Acura TLX remains an excellent value among luxury sedans.- KBB

Carrying forward from last year, the 2022 Acura TLX is available in the same 4 trim levels with the MSRP starting from $37,700 onwards for the Base 2.0T trim. All the trims are powered by the same 272 hp 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine that is hooked up to an FWD drivetrain as standard. For the upgrade to the SH-AWD drivetrain, be prepared to shell out $2,200 extra. The Type S costs at least $52,800 and with options like the performance wheel/tire package and a heated sport steering wheel, the price can go as high as $55,000. However, the 2022 TLX offers a good features per dollar value in its class and is quite competitive to compact luxury sport sedans and entry-level midsize cars, too.

For $43,000, the Technology Package adds Milano leather upholstery, 19-inch alloy wheels, and smart entry. The TLX A-Spec asks for $46,000 and upgrades the sound system, upholstery, and heating and ventilated seats as standard. The A-Spec adds sporty exterior styling - Dark gray 19-inch alloy wheels, Black decklid spoiler and Unique brushed aluminum interior trim with black headliner.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

Given its power and size, the Acura TLX is fairly efficient.- The Car Connection

The 2022 Acura TLX has the same fuel economy figures as the predecessor. Acura has maintained a perfect balance between performance and fuel efficiency, which made the Turbo Inline-4 engine offer EPA esitmated 22 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on highways. This makes room for a combined fuel economy of 25 MPG which is decent for the moniker.

With a large 15.9-gallon fuel tank, 2022 TLX offers an overall driving range of 398 miles. This stands at 350 miles in the city, and 493 miles on the highways. The overall range offered by the Acura TLX is sufficiently impressive for a longer drive, and you need to have only fewer stops at the gas station. If you upgrade to the TLX Type S, you can bid fuel frugality adieu in pursuit of performance.

While Honda Accord seems to have similar efficiency figures as Acura, the mighty BMW 3-Series and the Audi A4 offer better figures. The BMW 3 Series returns class-leading 30 MPG combined. The fuel tank of TLX Sedan is large enough to offer a good range in the city as well as highway. The Audi A4 comes second with its MPG figures while the Accord barely reaches third place.

Interior
8.0/10

The TLX's cabin isn't as impressive as the interiors of some pricier rivals.- Edmunds

The 2022 Acura TLX offers an unchanged interior over the 2021 model year, since it was refreshed last year. The luxurious and neat cabin offers a good amount of space for the passengers, especially in the front. The rear seems to be somewhat cramped for tall passengers. The TLX interior has been made far more practical and stylish than the first generation. The refreshed AcuraLink infotainment system and a plethora of features make the cabin rich and premium.

The entire cabin has been crafted even to the minute details. The leather upholstery is available from the Base trim which is upgraded to Milano leather in the Technology Package. The TLX A-Spec offers Milano upholstery with suede inserts. Moving up the trim levels, you will get Automatic Climate Control, plenty of storage space within the cabin, tech-packed infotainment, and a 13-speaker ELS sound system as standard fitment.

Competing with the rivals, Honda Accord gets the best figures in the space offered on front. It also scores top in the cargo capacity with 16.7 cubic feet of space followed by TLX at 13.5 cubic feet. The space offered on TLX is plenty enough in the front but could have been better at the rear.  The infotainment system that comes with the 2022 Acura TLX includes a 10.2-inch touchscreen interface along with onboard Navigation and the latest connectivity features

The audio system comprises a 13-speaker premium sound system by ELS and an optional 17-speaker ELS Studio sound system as part of the Technology package. For easy connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available. Additional features include in-car Wi-Fi, Voice Recognition, steering mounted controls, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The notable interior and infotainment features offered with the 2022 Acura TLX include:

  • Open-pore wood and aluminum interior trim
  • 12-way power adjustments
  • Driver eccentric dashboard design
  • Automatic Climate Control
  • Leather upholstery on seats and steering wheel

Exterior
8.0/10

The TLX, on the face of it, is good at so many things besides being a sports sedan.- The Drive

The second-generation Acura TLX has introduced a fresh face for the sedan. The streamlined design makes it more aerodynamic and improves the handling characteristics. With body lines all around, the 2022 Acura TLX now looks sportier. The front grille gets a diamond-shaped design, which makes the entire front fascia stylish and catchy. While the sharp Jewel Eye LED headlights emboss in the front, the triangular taillights beautify the rear end.

The 2022 TLX model remains the same in the design language and also dimensionally. We expect some more options in the exterior color. The standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels would also offer some options to the buyers. The hood is longer, as it is in the predecessor, making it longer than the rivals as well. As you move up the trim levels, the wheel size is bumped up to 19-inch alloy wheels which helps improve the ground clearance as well.

Compared to the rivals, the 2022 Acura TLX holds a curb weight of 3,709 lbs which makes it the heaviest ride. However, it is also the biggest ride in this lineup. Its corporate cousin, the Honda Accord is dimensionally similar but is one of the lightest rides in the competitors. The BMW 3 Series is the smallest ride with the best ground clearance in this lineup while the Audi A4 is the lightest one. Some highlight exterior features of the 2022 Acura TLX are:

  • Jewel Eye LED Headlights
  • 18”/19” Aluminium Alloy wheel
  • Power Folding Mirror with Puddle Light
  • LED Fog Lights
  • LED DRLs
  • Rain-Sensing Wipers
  • Front Windshield Wiper De-Icer

Safety
8.0/10

The TLX is about as safe as a car can get, at least based on its flawless performance in IIHS safety testing.- MotorTrend

The 2022 Acura TLX is yet to undergo any crash tests. The 2022 TLX, carried over from the 2021 model year, would stand on the same strong structure with a well-tuned chassis. The structure has been built prioritizing safety and stability. The 2021 Acura TLX received the top 5-star rating from the NHTSA. IIHS has also given ‘Good’ ratings in all parameters and nominated it to be the 2021 Top Safety Pick+ as well.

Notably, The rivals compete too well on the safety front. Audi A4 is honored with Top Safety Pick from IIHS, Honda Accord gets the Top Safety Pick+ from the same. BMW 3-Series also scores well in the ratings, which makes it tough to choose from them.

Some of the most notable features that help the case for the 2022 Acura TLX are:

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Emergency Braking
  • Lane-Keeping Assist
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • AcuraWatch Safety Suite
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Road departure mitigation
  • Advanced airbag system
  • ABS with EBD
  • Traction control

2022 Acura TLX vs 2022 Honda Accord

The 2022 Honda Accord is the same car underneath in a slightly lesser luxurious avatar as the 2022 TLX. With the same safety ratings, the tech onboard the TLX is better than the Accord. That being said, the Accord offers a bigger cargo room and better legroom in both rows of seating. The Acura TLX on the other hand offers better performance with similar gas mileage. Hence, it is a better option to pick the 2022 Acura TLX here.

2022 Acura TLX vs 2022 Audi A4

The 2022 Audi A4 is an excellent German sedan loved by many. It offers a crafted design in both interior and exterior and offers numerous tech tweaks within. It offers better acceleration and fuel efficiency as well, but Acura takes the lead over Audi in terms of raw power. The Audi A4 is for those who want a luxurious daily driver while the TLX is a family car that offers luxury. Overall, the 2022 Audi A4 seems like the better proposition.

2022 Acura TLX vs 2022 BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series remains unmatched and best-in-class for every aspect it is compared for. Being pricier than the 2022 Acura TLX, the 3 Series offers far better driving dynamics, handling, and performance. The engine specs, fuel efficiency, acceleration, technology, and every character get the best with the BMW 3 Series when taken as a rival for the TLX. Hence, it is a no-brainer that the Bimmer should be the one to pick amongst the two rivals.

Final Verdict
8.0/10

The fully redesigned second-generation Acura TLX offers great driving enthusiasm to every sedan lover. Powered with an efficient turbocharged engine, the sedan's performance is on the safer side. Be the interior or exterior, Acura TLX stands stylish and unique. It is efficient, safe, and stable to offer peace of mind to the passengers. Starting at a competitive price range of $37K to $48K, the 2022 TLX is a good pick for any sedan buyer. The opulent interior and eye-catching exterior will make it a compelling buy. For true performance, the V6-powered Type S presents a strong case and ought to be on your list.
